Chapter 4 - LOCKER SEVENTEEN The locker contained four folders, a digital recorder, and a red envelope.
The first folder contained Grace's medical records.
The second contained financial transfers.
The third contained surveillance photographs.
The fourth was marked:
VALE AGREEMENT.
Nathan opened it.
His stomach turned.
Five years earlier, Charles Cole and Sebastian Vale had signed a private agreement linking their corporate merger to Nathan's future marriage to Victoria.
Nathan had been a piece on a chessboard.
So had Grace.
So had Lily.
A handwritten note appeared beside Sebastian's signature:
If Grace refuses relocation, pursue capacity route.
Marcus stared at it.
“They planned to declare her mentally incompetent.”
Nathan's jaw tightened.
A sound echoed down the corridor.
Footsteps.
Two men appeared.
Then another.
Nathan grabbed the files.
Marcus kicked open the service door.
They ran.
Outside, Nathan opened the red envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
Charles.
Grace.
Sebastian.
And Eleanor Vale.
Grace was visibly pregnant.
On the back Charles had written:
Eleanor proposed the psychiatric commitment plan.
Nathan stared at the photograph.
His entire understanding of Victoria's family shifted.
Then his phone rang.
A man's voice said:
“Bring us the files.”
Nathan asked where Grace and Lily were.
The answer came with a photograph.
Grace and Lily were inside a vehicle.
Grace was secretly signaling him.
Two fingers crossed.
Behind her was a red sign.
Only three letters were visible.
MOT.
Nathan knew the place.
The abandoned Beaumont Theater.
