Chapter 6 - Whispers in the DarkThe morning sun cast a golden glow across the luxurious sheets of the guest suite inside the Moretti mansion. Elena woke up feeling more rested than she had in nine months. The exhaustion that had weighed her down like lead seemed to have lifted, replaced by the quiet safety of the thick walls surrounding her.

She walked softly over to the bassinet. Her son was sleeping soundly, his chest rising and falling in a steady, rhythmic cadence.

A soft knock at the door broke the morning silence. Thomas entered carrying a silver tray laden with nourishing broths, fresh fruit, and steaming herbal tea.

"Good morning, Miss Vance," Thomas greeted warmly, placing the tray on a small mahogany table near the window. "I trust you slept well?"

"I did, thank you, Thomas," Elena replied, running a hand through her hair. "Though it feels like a dream. I keep expecting to wake up back in that miserable apartment, with Arthur pounding on the door."

"You are entirely safe here, Madam," Thomas assured her, his tone unwavering. "Mr. Moretti requested that you join him in the conservatory for breakfast once you are ready. He wishes to discuss your future steps."

An hour later, dressed in a comfortable yet elegant ivory dress provided in her closet—another detail that stunned her by its perfect fit—Elena descended the grand staircase. Thomas guided her toward a glass-enclosed conservatory filled with lush tropical plants and bathed in morning sunlight.

Luca sat at a small wrought-iron table, reading a digital tablet while sipping black coffee. He looked up as she approached, rising smoothly from his chair.

"Elena. Good morning," Luca said, gesturing to the seat opposite him. "I hope you slept comfortably."

"Incredible comfort, Mr. Moretti. Almost too comfortable," Elena admitted, sitting down carefully. She looked across the table, gathering her courage. "We need to talk about why you're doing this. You saved my life, you gave us shelter, and your name is on my son's birth certificate. What do you expect in return? I have nothing left to give."

Luca set his tablet down, his gaze softening as he looked straight into her eyes. "I don't want anything from you, Elena. Not your money, not your compliance. I want you to rebuild your life. And as for my name on that certificate... consider it a legal shield. Arthur Sterling cannot touch what belongs to the Moretti family."
