Chapter 14 - The Confrontation

Miranda met Mrs. Dalton once before plea negotiations.

Lawyers present.

No Tess.

Mrs. Dalton looked smaller.

“I never meant to hurt her.”

Miranda said:

“Don't tell me what you didn't mean.”

Mrs. Dalton flinched.

“Tell me what you did.”

“I discharged the extinguisher.”

“At Tess.”

“Yes.”

“Threatened her.”

“Yes.”

“Took the envelope.”

“Yes.”

“Used family money.”

Mrs. Dalton looked down.

“Yes.”

Miranda’s voice stayed calm.

“Why?”

“I told you.”

“No. You told police the family owed you.”

Mrs. Dalton’s eyes filled.

“You have no idea what I gave this house.”

“Then tell me.”

Twenty-four years.

Missed weekends.

Lillian’s illness.

Graham’s secrets.

Miranda’s childhood.

Tess’s infancy.

“I was good enough to carry every ugly thing your family didn't want to hold.”

Mrs. Dalton cried.

“But never good enough to have anything.”

Miranda understood the wound.

She refused the conclusion.

“You were paid.”

Mrs. Dalton laughed bitterly.

“You think salary measures what I gave?”

“No.”

Miranda leaned forward.

“But you decided you could measure it yourself.”

Silence.

“And you used my father’s dishonesty as permission.”

Mrs. Dalton looked away.

Miranda continued:

“Then my mother’s silence.”

Nothing.

“Then mine.”

Mrs. Dalton whispered:

“Yes.”

That honesty hurt more than denial.

Miranda stood.

“You were family to me.”

Mrs. Dalton began sobbing.

Miranda’s eyes filled too.

“But family is not ownership.”

She left.

No hug.

May you like

No forgiveness.

Just truth.
