Six months after the incident, Tess still avoided the service hallway.
She took the main staircase.
Longer route.
Miranda never commented.
Then one Saturday, Tess stopped.
“Can we go that way?”
Miranda looked at the hallway.
“You sure?”
“No.”
Best answer.
They walked together.
The extinguisher had been replaced.
Standard safety equipment.
Sealed.
Inspected.
Tess looked at it.
Then at the office.
Door open.
Safe closed.
She took Miranda’s hand.
Walked past.
Nothing happened.
At the end of the hallway she whispered:
“That was boring.”
Miranda smiled.
