Chapter 20 - The Letter to Tess

Mrs. Dalton wrote Tess a letter.
Miranda read it first.
You told the truth when I wanted you to be afraid of it.
Miranda stopped.
Then continued.
I used something frightening because I wanted control of the next few minutes. I told myself I only needed time. That was cruel.
No request for forgiveness.
Good.
You did not cause what happened by walking into the office. You did not cause it by asking a question. You did not cause it by saying you would tell your mother.
Miranda cried.
She asked Dr. Foster whether Tess should read it.
“Ask Tess.”
Simple.
Tess said:
“Not now.”

Miranda put it away.
Choice preserved.
