Chapter 23 - Tess Opens the Letter

Tess was twelve when she asked for Mrs. Dalton’s letter.
Four years had passed.
Miranda handed it over.
No ceremony.
Tess read quietly.
Then folded it.
“Do I have to answer?”
“No.”
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Do you forgive her?”
Miranda thought.
“Some days I understand her.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Miranda smiled sadly.
“No.”
Tess nodded.
“Me neither.”
Pause.
“Maybe later.”
“Maybe.”
Tess placed the letter on the table.
It no longer looked dangerous.
