Chapter 11 - THE CONSEQUENCES
Maribel moved out of Villa Corsini.
Not because I ordered bodyguards to throw her belongings into the street.
She had her own apartment in Manhattan from before our marriage, held in a separate property structure. She moved there voluntarily while we entered marital counseling and legal separation discussions.
Yes.
Legal separation.
The marriage did not recover simply because the secret was understandable.
She had terrorized my elderly mother.
Manipulated staff.
Used family politics against me.
Dragged Estelle with a chain.
Love did not obligate me to decide forgiveness before safety.
Then my own conduct.
The chair pull caused bruising to Maribel’s hip and shoulder.
No fracture.
The security footage showed I intentionally used the chain to yank the chair after she was already seated and my mother was standing safely with me.
No self-defense.
Anger.
The prosecutor offered diversion based on limited injury and my cooperation.
I accepted.
Again, the older Corsini men found this intolerable.
Again, I found their opinion useful as evidence of why outside accountability mattered.
Then Maribel’s conduct.
Police reviewed the chain incident and prior bruising allegations.
Estelle initially resisted prosecution.
Eventually she gave a complete statement.
Maribel pleaded to a misdemeanor elder-abuse-related assault count after negotiations, acknowledging inappropriate force and the gala incident.
Probation.
Counseling.
No unsupervised contact with Estelle during the initial period.
No jail given limited injuries, no prior record, guilty plea, and acceptance of conditions.
Specific.
Not theatrical.
Then Renato.
No criminal charge.
His ethics threat was ugly but not extortion in the criminal sense on the facts we had.
The foundation barred him from advisory involvement for three years because he attempted to leverage an unsupported ethics allegation during a private succession dispute.
He called it exile.
