Chapter 12 - ESTELLE RETIRES HERSELF

My mother did something nobody expected.
She stepped back.
Not because Maribel forced her.
Because she had wanted to for a year.
She resigned from two gala committees.
Transferred the Patronage Book to the controlled family archive.
Ended her informal donor-introduction role except where someone called her personally as a friend.
Stopped approving holiday guest lists.
Asked the estate manager to remove her from all domestic-distribution emails.
Then she kept the chair.
That amused me.
“Why?”
“I like it.”
Fair.
At dinner, she sat beside me because she wanted.
Sometimes elsewhere.
No office attached.
Then one younger cousin asked:
“Who is Lady of the House now?”
Estelle answered:
“No one.”
The cousin looked confused.
“The house still works.”
May you like
“Yes.”
That was the lesson.
