Chapter 14 - MARIBEL WITHOUT THE CHAIR
Maribel’s life did not collapse.
That mattered.
She remained wealthy.
Her personal charitable work continued after an independent review found no misuse of funds.
She lost certain gala roles temporarily because organizations did not want controversy during the legal case.
Some returned later.
Some did not.
Her marriage remained uncertain.
Her social world changed.
But she was not thrown into poverty because my family disliked her.
Then therapy.
She began confronting the zero-sum way she saw women.
Older woman visible means younger woman invisible.
Mother loved means wife secondary.
Predecessor respected means successor not yet real.
She had spent years building a ladder where nobody asked her to climb.
Then one day she wrote me:
I thought being your wife meant there was a version of power waiting for me. When your mother ended that version, I experienced it as rejection by you.
I replied:
You could have asked me.
She answered:
May you like
I didn’t want you to give it to me. I wanted them to already know.
That sentence was honest enough to hurt.
