Chapter 8 - RENATO’S LEVERAGE
Renato Corsini was seventy-nine and had spent most of his life mistaking intimidation for wisdom.
He was my father’s older cousin.
In the old days he had been close to the political side of family operations, the man who knew which councilman’s son needed a job and which union official liked opera.
By my generation, his actual influence was modest.
His confidence was not.
He admitted threatening a foundation ethics inquiry.
His explanation:
“Leandro needed to stay out of women’s succession.”
I asked:
“What succession?”
“The House.”
“No office exists.”
“You can abolish paper. You cannot abolish family order.”
There it was.
Mafia nostalgia.
Then:
“Did you believe my mother lacked capacity?”
“I believed she was slipping.”
“Based on what?”
“Maribel’s reports.”
“Did you verify?”
“No.”
“Then why threaten me?”
“To prevent you from bullying the process.”
I almost laughed.
He threatened reputational damage to stop me from bullying.
Old men have remarkable flexibility with words.
Then the foundation investigation.
Independent counsel reviewed all alleged conflicts anyway.
No misuse found.
One business introduction originated from a donor my mother knew through charity, but negotiations were handled separately at market terms.
No ethics breach.
Renato’s leverage evaporated.
Then the Senior House Committee.
I asked whether he intended to revive it permanently.
“Yes.”
“With what authority?”
“Family agreement.”
“How many agreed?”
“Enough.”
“No.”
His face tightened.
“What?”
“Enough is not a number.”
Three active supporters.
Two hesitant.
No broad consent.
The committee existed because they said it existed.
Again.
Shadow power.
Then I did something my father would not have done.
I published a private family notice.
Not public internet.
Every adult Corsini received it.
THE SENIOR HOUSE COMMITTEE HAS NO RECOGNIZED AUTHORITY OVER FOUNDATION GOVERNANCE, ESTATE STAFF, FAMILY MEMBER CAPACITY, RESIDENTIAL RIGHTS, OR PERSONAL PROPERTY.
Then:
ANY FAMILY MEMBER MAY MEET SOCIALLY UNDER ANY NAME THEY CHOOSE. SUCH MEETINGS DO NOT CREATE AUTHORITY OVER OTHERS.
Renato called it insulting.
I called it accurate.
Then he threatened to stop attending Villa Corsini.
“Okay.”
He had expected negotiation.
There was none.
