Chapter 24 - ESTELLE’S LAST YEAR

My mother died at ninety-one.
Before that, she lost most names but kept music.
Daphne’s agency still staffed some of the villa, and one afternoon Daphne visited personally.
Estelle recognized her voice.
“Girl?”
Daphne laughed.
“Still twenty-seven in your head?”
“Maybe.”
Then Estelle touched her hand.
“You caught me.”
Daphne’s face changed.
The ballroom.
The chain.
Thirty-five? Actually 15 years maybe. Enough time.
“I did.”
“Thank you.”
That was all.
When Estelle died, no title transferred.
No woman of the house.
No chain ceremony.
No chair.
