Chapter 20 - The Final ClickAfter bedtime, Richard kissed Leo's forehead.
"Good night, buddy."
"Good night, Dad."
Richard switched off the lamp and closed the door.
Moonlight spilled across the bedroom.
For several minutes, Leo remained still.
Then his expression changed.
He reached beneath his mattress.
His fingers closed around another small black recording device.
A second device.
One nobody knew existed.
Leo pressed the button.
A voice whispered through the darkness.
"Victoria is taking the fall."
Leo's eyes narrowed.
The recording continued.
"She doesn't know I'm still inside the Astor operation."
A pause.
Then:
"By Christmas, the Astor empire will belong to me."
Leo slowly turned off the recorder.
He looked toward the bedroom door.
His innocent smile disappeared.
But then something strange happened.
He smiled again.
Not with fear.
With determination.
Because this time, he wasn't trapped behind a wall.
This time, he had a family.
He had a father.
He had Anna.
And he had a secret no enemy knew about.
Outside, the wind moved through the trees of the Astor Estate.
Somewhere beyond the gates, a black car sat beneath the shadows.
Its headlights suddenly switched on.
Leo looked toward the window.
