Chapter 10 - From the Shadows to the Throne

One year later.

The Vance Estate was once again illuminated by the brilliance of three thousand crystal chandeliers. But tonight, the atmosphere was entirely different. There were no sneering socialites, no predatory corporate vultures, and no fear lingering in the shadows.

Tonight was the grand celebration of the Evelyn Vance Foundation for Neurological Recovery, funded entirely by the liquidated assets of the now-defunct Sterling Group.

Standing near the edge of the grand ballroom, dressed in a stunning emerald-green silk gown that flowed like water over her graceful figure, stood Maria Santos. Her hair was styled in an elegant updo, exposing the delicate line of her neck, and her brown eyes shone with intelligence, warmth, and inner strength.

Beside her, standing tall and radiant on her own two feet, leaning only lightly on a polished wooden cane, was Sofia Santos.

"You're staring at him again, Maria," Sofia teased with a playful grin, nudging her sister’s elbow.

Maria blushed, looking across the crowded room.

Alexander stood near the grand fireplace, surrounded by ambassadors and medical directors. He looked as commanding and magnificent as ever in his bespoke tuxedo, but the moment he felt her gaze, he stopped speaking mid-sentence. His eyes locked onto Maria, and a slow, devastatingly handsome smile spread across his face.

He excused himself immediately, walking straight through the crowd toward her.

As he approached, Sofia giggled and gracefully slipped away toward the dessert tables, leaving them alone near the French doors that opened to the tranquil garden.

"You look breathtaking," Alexander whispered, his voice low, intimate, and possessive in the most wonderful way.

"You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Vance," Maria smiled, her eyes dancing with mischief.

Alexander reached out, taking her hand and leading her out onto the moonlit marble terrace. The cool night breeze stirred the hem of her gown, carrying the fragrance of blooming jasmine from the gardens.

"My mother just gave her speech," Alexander said, pride shining in his eyes. "Without a teleprompter. She walked to the podium herself."

"I saw," Maria said softly, her heart swelling with emotion. "She looks so happy, Alexander. You gave her her life back."

"No, Maria," Alexander said, stepping closer to her, his hands coming to rest gently on her waist. "You gave her life back. You gave *all* of us our lives back."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box.

Maria’s breath hitched. Her heart began to race in her chest, the exact same way it had that fateful night one year ago.

Alexander opened the box. Resting on the black velvet was his grandmother’s heirloom ring—the twelve-carat emerald-cut diamond that had started it all.

"When I placed this ring on your finger last year, it was out of respect, debt, and necessity," Alexander said, his voice trembling with an emotion he had never shown to another living soul.

He slowly sank down onto one knee beneath the starlit sky.

"Alexander..." Maria whispered, tears of pure happiness burning her eyes.

"Maria Santos," Alexander said, looking up at her with complete, unreserved devotion. "For the past year, I have watched you rebuild my mother’s spirit. I have watched you lead our charitable foundations with grace and fierce compassion. But most of all, I have watched you capture every single beat of my heart."

He lifted the ring from the box.

"I don't want you as a companion. I don't want you as a guardian. I want you as my equal. My partner. My wife. Will you marry me?"

Maria looked down at the man who had torn down an entire empire to protect her, the man who had shielded her from bullets and surrendered his heart to her courage.

She didn't hesitate.

"Yes," Maria whispered, smiling through her tears. "A thousand times, yes."

Alexander rose to his feet, sliding the magnificent diamond onto her left ring finger. It fit perfectly, sparkling beneath the moonlight like a captured star.

He wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet as he brought his lips down to hers. The kiss was deep, passionate, and filled with the promise of a lifetime—a fiery testament to the truth that courage, honor, and love could conquer the darkest greed in the world.

From the ballroom windows, Evelyn Vance stood watching them, raising a champagne flute in a silent, joyful toast.
