Chapter 20 - The Queen’s Gambit

The grand cathedral grew dead silent, save for the crackle of burning velvet and the groaning of wounded men lying among the splintered pews. The smoke hung thick and sweet with incense and cordite.
Alexander stepped out from behind the marble pillar.
He didn't take cover. He stood tall, the blood from a superficial cut on his cheek running down his sharp jawline, his tuxedo torn, but his posture that of an undisputed emperor. He held Maria’s hand firmly in his left, while his right hand held his smoking Glock pointed straight at Julian Sterling's heart.
Maria stood beside him, her white gown stained with grey soot and red brick dust, her veil trailing behind her like a battle standard.
"You're too late, Aunt Katarina," Maria said, her voice dropping into a lethal, icy calm that made the mercenaries behind the Russian matriarch hesitate. "The trust was tied to my biometric signature upon the completion of my marriage vows. At exactly 6:14 AM, the Voronin accounts were liquidated. Three point two billion dollars was just wire-transferred directly into the United States Department of Justice seized-asset escrow fund."
Katarina Voronin’s face froze. The aristocratic arrogance melted into absolute, horrifying disbelief. "You... you did what?"
"You killed my mother for that money," Maria spoke, each word hitting like a sledgehammer. "You hunted her across two continents and forced her to die in poverty while you drank champagne in Moscow. You thought I wanted a throne? I don't care about your mafia empire. I just bankrupted you. Every ship you own in the Baltic is currently being impounded by Interpol. You are penniless. You are powerless. And your own men know that your money is gone."
Katarina whipped around to her mercenaries. "Kill them! Shoot them both!"
The four elite Spetsnaz soldiers didn't move. They exchanged dark, cold glances. In the mercenary underworld, when the wire fails, the loyalty dies. One by one, the soldiers lowered their weapons, stepping back toward the shattered doorway, leaving Katarina and Julian completely isolated.
"Cowards!" Julian roared, his face turning purple with rage. He raised his silver-tipped cane, twisting the handle to reveal an eight-inch titanium blade. "I spent twelve years building this! Twelve years to destroy the Vance family! I WILL NOT BE ROBBED BY A MAID!"
Julian lunged forward with psychotic fury, charging up the altar steps toward Alexander.
Alexander didn't even flinch. He didn't fire his weapon.
As Julian reached the third step, Alexander stepped inside Julian’s guard with blinding speed, his left arm parrying the blade aside while his right elbow smashed with bone-shattering force into Julian’s jaw. The sound of fracturing cartilage cracked through the cathedral.
Julian spun and collapsed onto the altar steps, vomiting blood, the silver cane clattering down the marble stairs.
Alexander pressed the heavy sole of his polished dress shoe onto Julian’s throat, pressing down until the old man choked, his eyes bulging in terror.
"My father spared you once because he was a civilized man," Alexander said, his voice dropping to a whisper that sent shivers through the stone pillars. "I am not my father. You threaten my wife again, Julian, and I won't send you to prison. I will feed you to the wolves."
Carter and four federal agents swarmed the altar, instantly pinning Julian and Katarina Voronin to the floor in heavy steel cuffs.
The battle was over. The sirens outside grew into a deafening wall of sound as hundreds of federal tactical vehicles flooded Fifth Avenue.
Alexander turned back to Maria. The lethal fury in his eyes vanished, replaced by an overwhelming, breathless awe. He reached out, his hand gently wiping a smear of soot from her cheek.
"Mrs. Vance," Alexander whispered, his chest heaving. "Are you alright?"
Maria looked at the ring on her finger. She looked at the man who had stood between her and thirty rifles without taking a single step backward. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his chest, her whole body shaking as the adrenaline finally crashed.
"I am now," Maria sobbed, smiling through her tears as Alexander lifted her off her feet, burying his face into her hair. "I am now."
The double doors of the cathedral opened wide as the NYPD cleared the entrance. Sunlight broke through the storm clouds outside, casting a brilliant beam of golden light through the shattered rose window, illuminating the couple standing victorious at the altar.
Alexander took Maria’s hand, leading her down the center aisle, stepping over the broken glass, walking toward the daylight where hundreds of cameras and thousands of cheering citizens waited to crown their new queen.
As they reached the cathedral threshold, Maria’s phone in Carter’s pocket vibrated.
Carter pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and his face turned to pure ash.
He rushed forward, intercepting Alexander and Maria just before they stepped out onto the sunlit steps.
"Mr. Vance... Mrs. Vance... you need to see this," Carter choked out, holding up the phone.
On the screen was an encrypted live video feed.
It was Evelyn Vance’s penthouse bedroom at Vance Tower. The private hospital bed was empty. The medical monitors were flatlining.
Scrawled in fresh, crimson blood across the shattered mirror above the bed were four words:

*THE REAL ARCHITECT WAS NEVER JULIAN.*
Suddenly, high above Fifth Avenue, the sharp, crimson dot of a high-powered military sniper laser snapped onto the center of Alexander Vance’s chest.
