Chapter 7 - A Trap in Plain Sight

"They're here," Alexander growled, his hand instantly darting beneath his jacket to draw a custom black SIG Sauer from a concealed shoulder holster.

He grabbed Maria’s wrist with his left hand, pulling her toward the reinforced steel emergency exit built behind the study’s bookshelf. "Stay behind me. Don't leave my shadow."

"What about your mother?!" Maria gasped, her voice laced with panic as another burst of gunfire shattered the glass panels on the lower floors.

"The bunker beneath the cellar is hermetically sealed and armor-plated," Alexander answered rapidly, his eyes scanning the dim red corridor as they moved. "Even an anti-tank missile couldn't breach it. But they cut the main grid to disable the perimeter turrets. Julian doesn't want my mother right now—he wants the master decryption keys stored in my central terminal."

They reached the top of the grand marble staircase. Below them, in the grand foyer, smoke grenades had turned the air into an opaque, toxic haze. Flashlights sliced through the mist as half a dozen men in black tactical gear advanced, trading fire with Vance's security detail.

Suddenly, a voice echoed through the estate’s intercom system—smooth, aristocratic, and dripping with malicious amusement.

*“Good evening, brother.”*

Julian Cross’s voice rang through the speakers.

*“Did you really think locking yourself in your fortress would save you? While you’ve been playing knight in shining armor to a common housemaid, the board of directors has convened an emergency midnight session at Vance Tower. Victoria is already there, Alexander. Along with thirty percent of your voting shareholders.”*

Alexander’s eyes widened with sudden, furious comprehension.

"It's a diversion," Alexander hissed. "The attack on the estate isn't meant to kill us. It’s meant to pin us down here while Julian executes the proxy vote in Manhattan!"

"Can they do that?" Maria asked, her heart racing.

"If the CEO fails to appear at a declared emergency quorum, the interim chairman—which Julian bought out three weeks ago—can legally reassign executive power," Alexander explained grimly. "By sunrise, they will have seized the banking authorizations. Marcus!"

Marcus appeared from the smoke at the foot of the stairs, his tactical vest scorched, two empty magazines clattering to the floor as he reloaded. "Mr. Vance! Courtyard is being cleared! We eliminated their primary strike team, but they’ve blocked the main road with fallen timber!"

"The helipad," Alexander commanded. "Is the chopper operational?"

"Prepped and fueled, sir. But you have less than twenty minutes to reach Manhattan before the midnight gavel falls."

"We're going," Alexander said, gripping Maria’s hand tightly.

"Alexander, wait!" Maria pulled back slightly. "You need to go alone! I will only slow you down! I can stay with your mother in the bunker!"

Alexander turned to her, his face illuminated by the pulsing crimson emergency lights. He reached out, cupping her face in his large, warm hand, his thumb resting gently against her cheekbone.

"You don't understand, Maria," Alexander said, his voice deadly serious. "You aren't just a bystander anymore. You hold the key to their destruction."

"What do you mean?"

Alexander pulled a small, high-density flash drive from his pocket and pressed it into her palm, closing her fingers tightly around it.

"Richard Sterling didn't just confess to attempted murder on the surveillance footage. Before he collapsed, he gave Marcus the encrypted offshore account numbers Julian used to finance this entire coup. The only person whose biometric signature can unlock this drive without triggering an auto-wipe protocol is the person wearing my grandmother’s heirloom ring."

Maria looked down at the massive twelve-carat diamond on her finger. The stone caught the red strobe light, gleaming with lethal intent.

"The ring isn't just jewelry, Maria," Alexander whispered, a dark, victorious glint in his eye. "It’s a hardware authentication key. My grandfather designed it to ensure the family fortune could never be stolen without the true heir's consent. When I put that ring on your finger in front of the entire ballroom, I made you the sole authorized custodian of Vance Global's emergency reserves."

Maria’s breath caught in her throat. "Alexander... you gave me control of your entire empire?"

May you like

"I gave it to the only person in this world who wouldn't sell it out for thirty pieces of silver," he said fiercely. "Now, let’s go finish what you started with that slap."
