Chapter 18 - The Steel-Plated Altar

Dawn broke over New York City beneath a canopy of bruised, slate-grey storm clouds. A light drizzle slicked the fifth-avenue asphalt, reflecting the flashing red and blue lights of over forty NYPD cruisers blocking off the perimeter around St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

The city was on knife’s edge. Rumors of a massive gangland war had leaked to the press, yet thousands of spectators lined the barricades behind swathes of armed tactical units. They had come to witness the most anticipated, dangerous wedding in American history.

Inside the cathedral’s private vestry, Maria stood before a towering antique mirror.

She wore a gown that was nothing short of armor. Designed overnight by Alexander’s private couturiers, the dress was crafted from heavy, pure-white duchess satin woven with lightweight Kevlar threads through the bodice. The long sleeves were encrusted with thousands of micro-pearls, masking the tactical harness beneath. Her veil was sheer, flowing behind her like a river of mist, crowned with a platinum tiara sparkling with diamonds that once belonged to the Russian Imperial court—retrieved that morning from a Manhattan private vault.

The door opened softly. Evelyn Vance walked in, leaning lightly on an ebony cane. She looked pale, but her eyes blazed with maternal pride.

"You look like an empress, my darling," Evelyn said, tears shimmering in her eyes.

"I feel like a target, Evelyn," Maria confessed, her voice shaking slightly as she adjusted the diamond collar around her throat. "What if Alexander dies because of my family's sins? I never wanted this money. I only wanted him."

Evelyn walked up, placing her gloved hands on Maria’s shoulders. "Listen to me, Maria. My son has spent his entire life surrounded by people who loved his name, his bank accounts, and his power. You are the only person who ever looked at Alexander Vance and saw the lonely boy underneath. You didn't bring danger to him; danger has followed this family for generations. Today, you don't run. Today, you take your rightful seat."

A heavy knock sounded at the door. Carter stepped in, wearing a full tactical vest over his dress suit. "Ten minutes, Mrs. Vance. Perimeter is locked. Snipers on every rooftop from 50th to 51st Street. Mr. Vance is already at the altar."

Maria took a deep, steadying breath. She looked at herself in the mirror one last time. The terrified maid who had scrubbed floors was gone. In her place stood a woman ready to take an empire.

"Let's go," Maria said.

The organ roared to life.

The massive, heavy oak doors of St. Patrick’s Cathedral swung open. The pews were filled not with delicate socialites, but with over two hundred armed Vance security operatives, trusted federal allies, and hand-picked loyalists, all dressed in formal black-tie attire with concealed automatic weapons.

At the far end of the endless aisle, beneath the soaring Gothic arches, stood Alexander.

He was magnificent. Dressed in a bespoke black tuxedo with a white rose on his lapel, his broad shoulders squared, his eyes fixed on Maria with a ferocity of love and possession that stole the breath from her lungs. Beside him, Father Thomas stood with the open Bible, looking remarkably calm despite the tactical ear-piece hidden beneath his vestments.

Maria stepped onto the white runner. Every step she took echoed through the cavernous cathedral like a drumbeat.

Alexander watched her approach, his heart pounding against his ribs. She wasn't just his bride; she was his warrior. She had faced down his enemies, uncovered the rot in his dynasty, and held his world together when it threatened to splinter into ash.

She reached the altar. Alexander took her hand. Her fingers were warm, steady now.

"You are breathtaking," Alexander whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion.

"Keep that thought until we survive the vows," Maria whispered back with a daring, lethal smile.

Father Thomas raised his hands. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here in the face of God and this company to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony..."

Suddenly, the great stained-glass window behind the altar—the towering depiction of St. Michael slaying the dragon—shattered inward in a deafening storm of colored glass and iron.
