Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Ice Queen

Victoria took an involuntary step backward. She was used to Alexander’s emotional detachment—their two-year relationship had been forged in boardrooms and sealed by a mutual exchange of corporate prestige—but she had never seen this look in his eyes. It was the look he gave hedge fund managers right before he engineered their total bankruptcy.
"Alexander, please," Victoria stammered, raising her hands defensively, the panic finally cracking her polished facade. "You're making a scene. We have journalists here. Board members! Let security handle this trash quietly and—"
"Security?" Alexander’s voice was barely above a whisper, yet it cut through the cavernous hall like a razor blade. "You want security, Victoria?"
He turned his head slightly toward the perimeter of the room. "Marcus."
Out of the shadows, the head of Vance Global Security—a towering former military operative with a scarred brow—instantly materialized. "Yes, Mr. Vance."
"The private alcove corridor," Alexander said, never taking his eyes off Victoria. "Does the new surveillance array cover that blind spot?"
Victoria’s breath hitched. Her eyes darted toward the high vaulted ceiling.
"Installed yesterday morning, sir," Marcus answered crisply. "Full 4K audio and video capture. Uploads directly to the primary cloud server."
"Play it," Alexander commanded. "On the ballroom main screens."
"No!" Victoria screamed, her voice losing every shred of aristocratic poise. "Alexander, no! That’s a violation of privacy! You cannot humiliate me like this!"
"Play it, Marcus."
Marcus pulled a secure tablet from his jacket and tapped the glass twice. Above the grand bar and across the three massive multimedia walls flanking the ballroom, the promotional Vance Global corporate loops flickered and died. In their place, a crystal-clear, high-definition video feed appeared.
The room gasped.
There was Victoria, her face twisted in a sneer of pure disgust. The high-fidelity audio system broadcast her voice with sickening clarity:
*“Why is this wretched thing sitting out here ruining the aesthetic?”*
The crowd began to whisper. Several older board members frowned, exchanging disgusted looks.
Then came the spilled water. And then, Victoria’s vicious, snarling tirade:
*“You senile old hag! Do you have any idea how much this dress costs? You’re barely human anymore! You belong locked away in an institution, rotting out of sight!”*
Gasps turned into open murmurs of outrage. Evelyn Vance had founded the children's hospitals that bore their name; she was revered across the state. To see the glamorous Victoria Sterling treat her like vermin was a shockwave through the room.
And then, the screen showed Victoria raising her hand, diamond ring poised to strike a helpless woman in a wheelchair.
Next came the crash of the silver tray. Maria stepping in like an avenging angel. The crisp, beautiful sound of Maria’s hand striking Victoria’s face.
The video paused on a freeze-frame of Victoria clutching her red cheek.
Alexander stood motionless, his hands casually tucked into his trouser pockets. The sheer aura of controlled, lethal fury radiating from him made the air feel twenty degrees colder.
"You called my mother a wretched thing," Alexander said softly, each syllable dropped like lead into water. "You called her barely human. And you raised your hand against the woman who built the empire your father is currently begging me to bail out."
Victoria’s face was as white as freshly fallen snow. "Alexander... I was upset! The stress of the gala, the press... I lost my temper! She ruined a fifty-thousand-dollar gown! You know how important appearances are!"
"Appearances," Alexander repeated, nodding slowly. "Yes. You have always cared very much about appearances."
He took three slow, deliberate strides toward her. Victoria stood paralyzed, unable to look away from his cold, predatory eyes.
Alexander reached out. For a split second, Victoria thought he was going to comfort her. She reached her hand up toward his.
Instead, Alexander gripped her left wrist with crushing precision.
With his other hand, he took hold of the magnificent twelve-carat, emerald-cut diamond ring resting on her finger—the Vance family heirloom that had announced their engagement six months ago.
With a single, smooth, unyielding motion, he pulled the ring off her finger.
Victoria let out a strangled cry. "Alexander! What are you doing?!"
"The engagement is over," Alexander stated flatly.
A collective shockwave ripped through the room. Cameras from several society reporters began flashing relentlessly, capturing the utter destruction of Victoria Sterling.
"You can't do this!" Victoria wailed, grabbing at his sleeve. "Our families have contracts! The Sterling Group merger relies on this marriage! My father—"
"Your father’s company is over-leveraged by two hundred million dollars," Alexander said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. "Tomorrow morning at eight o'clock, Vance Capital will initiate a hostile takeover of Sterling Holdings. By noon, your family will own nothing. By five o'clock, you won't be able to afford a subway ticket, let alone a fifty-thousand-dollar dress."
"Alexander! Please!" Victoria broke down, falling to her knees on the damp marble floor, sobbing hysterically. "Don't do this to me! I love you! I'm sorry! I'll apologize to her! Evelyn, please, forgive me!"
She reached out to grab Evelyn’s wheelchair, but Alexander stepped firmly into her path, his polished leather shoe stopping inches from her face.
"Marcus," Alexander commanded, his gaze remaining fixed on the sobbing mess on the floor.
"Sir?"
"Escort Miss Sterling off the property. If she ever sets foot within a thousand yards of my mother, my home, or my offices again, have her arrested for attempted assault and corporate extortion."
"Right away, sir."
Two massive security guards in dark suits stepped forward, hauled Victoria to her feet by her elbows, and dragged her toward the side exit. Her hysterical screams echoed through the grand foyer: "YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS, ALEXANDER! BOTH OF YOU WILL PAY FOR THIS!"
The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut behind her, cutting off the noise.
Silence returned to the ballroom. A suffocating, awe-struck silence.
Alexander didn't look at the crowd. He looked down at the twelve-carat diamond ring resting in his open palm. The facets caught the chandelier light, throwing brilliant sparks of fire across his dark suit.
Then, slowly, deliberately, he turned around.
He didn't look at the board members. He didn't look at the high-society socialites.
His eyes locked directly onto Maria.
Maria stood frozen, her hands still trembling from the adrenaline rush, her uniform slightly disheveled. She watched as the most powerful man in the state walked toward her, each step echoing with thunderous intent.
He stopped directly in front of her.
He didn't offer her a severance check. He didn't tell her she was fired.

Instead, he reached out, took Maria’s trembling, work-roughened right hand, and lifted it between them.
