Chapter 9 - The Stripping of the Crown

The boardroom was dead silent. The twenty-four board members who had raised their hands to betray Alexander stood frozen, sweating through their tailored suits, terrified to look their CEO in the eye.
Alexander slowly took his seat at the head of the table. He leaned back, resting his elbows on the leather armrests, his steely gaze sweeping over every single traitor in the room.
"Mr... Mr. Vance," the senior board member stammered, wiping his brow with a silk handkerchief. "We were misled. Julian threatened our families' holdings. We had no choice—"
"You always have a choice, Arthur," Alexander interrupted quietly. "Maria Santos had a choice when she saw a woman in danger. She had no money, no security, and everything to lose. Yet she chose honor."
Alexander leaned forward, his eyes burning with cold finality.
"Every single board member who raised their hand tonight has until nine o'clock tomorrow morning to tender their total resignation and surrender their vested stock options at par value. If you refuse, I will personally direct our forensic accountants to review your tax filings from the past decade. By noon, the IRS will have what they need to join Julian Cross in federal court."
He didn't wait for an answer. "Get out of my sight."
The board members scrambled for the exits like rats fleeing a sinking ship, practically tumbling over one another to escape his wrath.
Within two minutes, the grand penthouse boardroom was empty, save for Alexander, Maria, and the stunning view of the sunrise beginning to paint the Manhattan skyline in shades of gold and amber.
Alexander let out a long, ragged exhale. The monstrous tension that had held his body rigid for days finally snapped. He buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders dropping.
Maria walked quietly over to his side. She placed a gentle, comforting hand on his shoulder.
Alexander froze for a moment, then reached up and covered her hand with his own. He slowly looked up at her, the golden light of dawn illuminating the softness in his eyes.
"It's over," she whispered softly.
"It's over," he agreed.
He stood up, turning to face her. He reached for her right hand, lifting it between them. The twelve-carat diamond ring caught the morning sun, blazing with blinding, pure white fire.
"I promised you that your sister would be taken care of," Alexander said softly. "The surgery has been scheduled for next Tuesday. Dr. Chen is confident."
Maria smiled, tears of joy welling in her eyes. "Thank you, Alexander. I can never repay you for that."
"You don't owe me anything, Maria," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a tone so deep, so tender, it made her heart skip a beat. "I owe you everything. You saved my mother's life. You saved my family's legacy. You stood by me when an army was at my gates."
Maria looked down at the massive diamond on her finger. Slowly, reluctantly, she began to slide it off. "Then I should return this to you. The battle is won. You don't need a cryptographic key anymore."
She held the ring out to him on her palm.
Alexander didn't take it.
Instead, he took her hand, closed her fingers over the diamond, and looked directly into her soul.
"I didn't give you that ring just for the encryption codes, Maria."

Maria’s breath caught in her throat. "Alexander... what are you saying?"
