Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Vance Dynasty

The gunshot shattered the remaining calm of the night, echoing through the cavernous ballroom like thunder trapped indoors.
A bullet tore through the air, but before it could find its mark, Alexander Vance moved with inhuman speed. He lunged forward, his heavy wool overcoat whipping through the air as he tackled Maria to the floor, rolling them both beneath the shelter of a solid mahogany serving station.
The bullet slammed into the marble column behind them, spraying sharp chips of stone into the dark.
*BANG!*
A second shot rang out—crisp, controlled, and singular.
Silence fell.
Alexander didn't move for three agonizing seconds. He stayed draped over Maria, his breath hot against her temple, his arms a fortress around her trembling shoulders.
"Are you hit?" he demanded, his voice rough, shaking with an intensity she hadn't heard before. "Maria. Look at me. Are you hit?"
Maria blinked through the fog of cordite and dust. She looked up into his stormy eyes, inches from her own. "I... I don't think so. Are you?"
Alexander exhaled a sharp breath, his jaw clenched tight. Slowly, he shifted his weight and rose to his feet, offering a hand to help her up.
In the center of the shattered ballroom, Richard Sterling lay flat on his back, clutching a bleeding shoulder. Marcus stood over him, his tactical pistol lowered, smoke trailing from the barrel. Behind the shattered French doors, the sound of approaching police sirens wailed against the driving rain.
Victoria, seeing her father bleeding on the floor, let out a piercing shriek from the terrace and attempted to flee into the gardens, but two Vance security officers emerged from the darkness and pinned her to the wet lawn, cuffing her wrists behind her back.
Alexander walked slowly toward the wounded patriarch of the Sterling family. He looked down at Richard, whose face was pale and slick with rain and sweat.
"Attempted murder," Alexander said softly, his voice colder than the grave. "Conspiracy to commit corporate manslaughter. Reckless endangerment. And treason against Vance Global."
"Alexander... please..." Richard gasped, coughing violently. "It wasn't supposed to happen like this... we were drowning... we owed the offshore cartels..."
"You will spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary," Alexander whispered, stepping over the pool of blood spreading across the marble. "Marcus. Secure them for the authorities. Ensure the District Attorney receives the unedited surveillance footage from the past forty-eight hours."
"Understood, sir."
Alexander turned and walked back to where Maria was kneeling beside Evelyn. The elderly woman was breathing heavily, but she was unharmed, her eyes fixed on Maria with a mixture of reverence and motherly warmth.
"Mother," Alexander said gently. "It's over."
Evelyn slowly shook her head, pointing a trembling finger at Maria, then reaching out to touch Alexander's lapel. She looked at her son with absolute clarity, mouthing a single word that needed no sound:
*Stay.*
Alexander nodded. "She isn't going anywhere, Mother."
He looked at Maria. Her apron was torn, her hair was disheveled, and there was a streak of dust across her cheekbone. Yet, standing beneath the fractured crystal of the ballroom, wearing a multi-million-dollar heirloom ring on her servant's uniform, she looked more regal than any heiress who had ever walked those halls.
"Come," Alexander said, extending his hand to her. "We are leaving this room."
"Mr. Vance, I should go home," Maria said, taking a step back, her voice shaking as the shock finally set in. "My sister... I need to see Sofia. If the Sterlings know about her—"
"I told you," Alexander interrupted, his voice dropping into a tone that brooked no argument. "Sofia is already being moved to the Vance Medical Pavilion under armed escort. She is in the safest medical facility in the country right now. You cannot go back to your apartment, Maria. Richard Sterling owes money to dangerous people. Tonight was their desperate bid to seize control of my assets. You are now the primary witness against them."
Maria swallowed hard. "Then what am I supposed to do?"
"You stay here," Alexander said, his eyes burning into hers. "At the estate. In the private wing. As my mother’s personal guardian and my personal guest."
"People will talk," Maria warned quietly. "They will say a maid used an incident to climb into the Vance family."
Alexander took a slow step closer to her, closing the distance until she could feel the heat radiating from him.
May you like
"Let them talk," Alexander whispered, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corner of his lips. "Let the entire world watch what happens when someone earns the protection of Alexander Vance."
