Chapter 14 - The Ghost of Monaco

The Grand Hall remained paralyzed. Security guards from the museum froze, their hands hovering over their holsters, but nobody dared move. Surrounding the perimeter at the second-floor mezzanine were half a dozen men dressed in black tactical gear, laser sights dancing across the marble floor like deadly crimson fireflies.
One of the red dots rested squarely between Alexander Vance's eyes. Another sat on the diamond collar resting against Maria’s throat.
Alexander did not lower his weapon. His stance was iron, his broad body angled to completely shield Maria from the snipers above.
"Julian Sterling," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a register of deadly calm. "I should have known a rat like you would survive an explosion. You always were fond of letting other men burn for your mistakes."
Julian chuckled, descending the grand stairs with slow, deliberate steps. The rhythmic *tap-tap-tap* of his silver-tipped cane echoed like the ticking of an executioner's clock. Victoria Davenport walked one pace behind him, staring at Maria with eyes full of feral venom.
"A rat survives because he knows which ships are destined to sink, my boy," Julian said, pausing on the mid-landing. "Your father, Thomas Vance, was an arrogant hypocrite. He preached philanthropy while signing contracts with blood on the ink. He stole the proprietary navigation codes for Vance Global shipping from me—codes that made your empire what it is today."
"You forged those patents," Maria called out, her voice cutting through the heavy air with astonishing clarity.
Alexander glanced at her, warning her with his eyes to stay behind him, but Maria did not shrink back. She stepped forward until she stood shoulder to shoulder with the man she loved, staring straight into the eyes of the man who commanded the guns.
"You forged the patents through shell companies in Zurich," Maria declared, her chin held high. "I spent the last eight months auditing the historical archives for the Vance philanthropic foundations. Your signature is on the fraudulent promissory notes, Julian. Thomas Vance didn't steal from you. He caught you embezzling from the maritime pension funds and threw you out of the boardroom."
A sharp murmur passed among the elite guests crouching behind the marble pillars.
Julian’s smile vanished. For a split second, the facade of aristocratic composure slipped, revealing the hideous, snarling narcissist beneath.
"Listen to the little domestic," Victoria spat, stepping forward, her manicured fingers trembling with rage. "You cleaned my toilets! You ironed my dresses! And now you dare speak to men who move world markets? Look at her, Julian! She’s wearing the Vance family diamonds while I am treated like an outcast in my own social circle! Shoot her! Shoot her right now!"
"Shut up, Victoria," Julian snapped coldly without looking at her. His gaze remained locked on Maria. "Impressive, little maid. You have a brain behind those peasant eyes. But intelligence without power is just an entertaining prelude to a massacre."
Julian raised his silver cane.
"Alexander!" Carter’s voice suddenly screamed through the encrypted tactical comms in Alexander’s earpiece. *"Breach from the south! We have the roof! MOVE!"*
A deafening flashbang grenade detonated on the mezzanine.
Blinding white light and an ear-splitting crack shattered the darkness. The snipers above shouted in confusion as tactical smoke canisters deployed from the ceiling vents, turning the grand hall into a churning sea of fog. Gunfire erupted—controlled, rhythmic bursts from Vance security forces breaching through the high windows.
"Down!" Alexander roared, tackling Maria to the marble floor and covering her body with his own as stray rounds ricocheted off the ancient stone statues above.
Chips of limestone rained down like shrapnel. Maria felt the explosive thrum of Alexander’s heart against her chest, felt the ferocious heat of his arms locking her into safety.
"Are you hit?" Alexander demanded, his hands instantly checking her neck, her ribs, her waist through the torn silk of her gown. "Maria, look at me! Are you hit?"
"I'm fine! I'm whole!" she gasped, looking up into his fierce, smoke-stained face. "Alexander—Julian and Victoria! They're retreating toward the back exits!"
Alexander looked through the smoke. Julian’s white suit was disappearing through the heavy emergency doors toward the loading docks, dragged by two armed mercenaries, while Victoria scrambled behind them.

Alexander gripped his weapon, his eyes blazing with the thirst for blood. "Carter! Contain the perimeter! Nobody leaves the island of Manhattan! Lock down every bridge, every tunnel, every private airfield! I want them hunted like dogs!"
