Chapter 1: Walking into the nursery

"You will answer for this!" Sarah’s voice cracked with a toxic blend of righteous fury and deep-seated malice, her eyes flashing with a dangerous intensity.
Emily whimpered, her hands clutching blindly at the polished wood of the crib rail as tears streamed hot and fast down her flushed cheeks. The infant, little Chloe, lay trapped in the center of the slatted wooden enclosure, her tiny limbs thrashing wildly as her face turned a bruised, distressed crimson from nonstop screaming. Every shriek of the baby seemed to fuel Sarah’s volatile rage, driving her to press her advantage, twisting Emily’s hair tighter.
At the threshold, Mark stood frozen, his hand still resting on the brass doorknob. His breath caught in his throat, his eyes wide with utter disbelief as he stared at the horrifying scene playing out before him. The man’s face contorted into an expression of agonizing heartbreak; red-rimmed and damp with sudden, hot tears, his mouth hung open in a silent, paralyzed scream. His mother, the woman he had trusted to help guide their new family, was actively terrorizing his exhausted, defenseless wife.
"Stop!" Mark finally roared, his voice a fractured echo of a man whose world was shattering into a million jagged pieces.
Before Sarah could react to her son's sudden entrance, Mark lunged forward with explosive energy, his boots pounding against the carpeted floor. Sarah released her grip on Emily, turning just in time as Mark charged past her, locking his sights entirely on his fleeing mother. Panic flickered across Sarah’s hardened features for a fraction of a second, her sneakers squeaking against the floorboards as she pivoted and bolted toward the hallway.

Mark was faster, driven by an adrenaline-fueled surge of pure protective fury. He intercepted her path near the towering mahogany wardrobe, his heavy hand clamping down firmly around her wrist with iron strength. With a sharp, decisive yank, he spun her around, his muscular frame shielding the rest of the room. Sarah stumbled backward under the sudden momentum, her feet tangling before she lost her balance completely, crashing hard onto the floor with a dull, echoing thud.
The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by Chloe’s fading, exhausted sobs from the crib. Mark stood over his fallen mother, his chest heaving, his fists clenched so tightly his fingernails dug deep into his palms. The battle line had been drawn, and the unspoken war for the heart of their family had officially begun.
