Chapter 3 - Shadows of DoubtNight descended upon the suburban neighborhood, casting long, eerie shadows across the nursery walls. While Emily finally managed to lull little Chloe back to a deep, peaceful slumber, Mark sat downstairs at the kitchen island, staring blankly into a cup of cold black coffee. The house felt hollow, stripped of its warmth by the bitter confrontation earlier that evening.

His phone buzzed softly against the quartz countertop, breaking the oppressive silence. Mark picked it up, his thumb swiping across the screen to reveal a text message from an unknown number. It was a photo—a blurred snapshot of Emily from earlier that week, looking exhausted while holding the baby at a local park, paired with a chilling caption: She’s hiding something from you, Mark. Ask her about her past.
Mark’s stomach churned. He knew his mother was petty, but this calculated psychological warfare struck a raw nerve. Sarah had always been fiercely possessive of him, vetting every friend and partner he had ever brought home. Emily had been the only one who managed to break through his mother's iron defenses—or so he had thought until they got married and moved into this house under Sarah’s persistent offer to help with the baby.
Footsteps padded softly down the wooden stairs, and Emily stepped into the kitchen. She looked pale, her eyes ringed with dark circles, wearing an oversized sweater that swallowed her frame. She poured herself a glass of water, her hand trembling slightly as the glass clinked against the pitcher.
"Is she gone?" Emily asked softly, avoiding Mark's gaze as she leaned against the counter opposite him.
"Yeah. She went to a motel downtown, or so she claims," Mark answered honestly, sliding his phone face down on the table. He wanted to shield Emily from the toxic text, at least for tonight. "Emily, look at me."
Emily hesitated before lifting her gaze, meeting his intense, searching eyes.
"Did something happen before today that I should know about?" Mark asked gently, keeping his tone carefully neutral to avoid sounding accusatory. "Between you and my mom? I know she was difficult, but her hatred today felt... personal. Beyond just normal mother-in-law friction."
A shadow crossed Emily’s face, a flicker of profound guilt mixed with genuine fear. She bit her lower lip, looking away toward the dark window where their reflections stared back like ghosts.

"She found out something about my family, Mark," Emily whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of a secret she had buried deep in her past. "Something I was terrified would ruin us."
Mark’s heart skipped a beat, a cold dread washing over him as the foundation of his trust shuddered for the very first time.
