Chapter 4 - The Confession in the DarkThe kitchen light hummed quietly, casting a sterile glow over the two people who had promised to share their lives through every storm. Mark stood up slowly, walking around the island to close the distance between them. He gently placed his hands on Emily’s shoulders, feeling the tension radiating from her muscles.

"Whatever it is, you can tell me, Em," Mark said, his voice a steady anchor in the brewing tempest. "We promised no secrets, remember? Nothing from your past can change how I feel about you."
Emily let out a shaky breath, tears pooling once again in her eyes as she looked up at her husband. "It's not about me doing something wrong, Mark. It's about... who my biological father is. Or rather, who your mother believes he is."
Mark frowned, confusion furrowing his brow. "What are you talking about? Your parents passed away in that car accident when you were a teenager. We talked about this."
"They weren't my biological parents," Emily confessed, the words tumbling out in a rush as if she had been holding back a dam for years. "They were my aunt and uncle. They adopted me legally, but my real father... your mother knew him, Mark. Decades ago, before my father passed away, he and your mother had a bitter falling out over a failed business venture that ruined your family financially for years."
The revelation hit Mark like a physical blow. He stepped back slightly, his hands dropping from her shoulders as his mind raced to piece together the horrifying puzzle. "A business venture? Financial ruin? My dad always said a bad partner took everything from us before he died..."
"It was my biological father," Emily sobbed, covering her face with her hands. "When your mother found out who I really was—that I was his daughter—she didn't see me as your wife or Chloe’s mother. She saw me as the ultimate revenge. She moved in here under the guise of helping us, but she was planning to destroy me slowly, to make me pay for sins I had nothing to do with."
Mark stared at his wife, a whirlwind of anger, betrayal, and deep sympathy warring inside his chest. His mother hadn't just been acting out of general malice; she had orchestrated a calculated vendetta, weaponizing her own presence under their roof to torment an innocent woman.

"She knew all along," Mark whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, cold rage. "She lied to both of us from the moment she walked through our front door."
Before Emily could respond, a sharp knock echoed loudly against the front door, shattering the quiet night and signaling that Sarah was far from finished with her campaign of destruction.
