Chapter 2 - Shattered FoundationsThe dust in the nursery slowly settled, but the emotional debris hung suffocatingly heavy in the air. Mark knelt beside Emily, his rugged face a mask of profound sorrow and tender concern as he gently pulled her trembling form into his arms. Emily buried her face into the fabric of his dark gray t-shirt, her shoulders shaking violently with suppressed trauma.

"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, Mark," Emily choked out, her voice barely audible over the hum of the house's ventilation system. "I tried to calm her down, but she just walked in and accused me of neglecting the baby..."

Mark rested his chin against the top of her head, his eyes burning as he glared across the room at his mother. Sarah had picked herself up from the floor, brushing off her dark zip-up hoodie with an air of cold, unapologetic defiance. There was no remorse in her posture, only a hardened, calculating glint in her eyes that told Mark this was far from over.

"You don't have to apologize for anything," Mark whispered fiercely, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hands. "You are the mother of my child, and no one—not even my own mother—will ever lay a hand on you in this house again."

Sarah scoffed, crossing her arms tightly over her chest as she leaned against the doorframe. "You're a fool, Mark," she sneered, her voice dripping with venomous manipulation. "You're letting this ungrateful girl pull the wool over your eyes. While you're out working yourself to the bone, she’s unraveling. She's a danger to my granddaughter!"

"Shut up, Mom!" Mark yelled, rising abruptly to his feet and stepping between Sarah and his wife. The sheer intensity in his posture caused Sarah to step back a fraction, though her scowl remained fixed. "Get out. Pack your bags and get out of our home tonight. If you're still here when the sun comes up, I'll call the authorities myself."

Sarah’s eyes widened in genuine shock, her jaw tightening as the reality of her son's ultimatum sunk in. She had always held absolute sway over Mark, especially after his father had passed away years ago. To be cast aside for a younger woman felt like the ultimate betrayal.

"You're choosing her over your own flesh and blood?" Sarah hissed, pointing an accusing finger toward Emily, who was now carefully lifting crying little Chloe from the crib, cradling her against her chest with tender, aching care.

"I am choosing my family," Mark replied, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous whisper that left no room for negotiation. "And right now, my family is the wife and child you just assaulted. Leave. Now."

With a final, murderous glare directed entirely at Emily, Sarah turned on her heel and stormed down the hallway, the heavy stomp of her footsteps echoing through the quiet house. A door slammed shut in the distance, signaling the end of round one, but Mark knew the war was only just beginning.
