Chapter 5 - The Uninvited Guest at MidnightMark strode briskly toward the entryway, his jaw set in a hard line, while Emily hurried to the bottom of the stairs, clutching her chest as anxiety gripped her anew. Mark wrenched the front door open, expecting to see his mother demanding reentry or hurling more insults. Instead, standing on the porch under the flickering yellow glow of the porch light was a tall, unfamiliar man in a sharp tailored suit, holding a heavy manila folder.

"Mark Taylor?" the man asked in a crisp, professional tone, his expression completely devoid of warmth.

"Yeah, that's me. Who are you?" Mark demanded, blocking the doorway with his broad frame.

"My name is Arthur Vance. I'm an attorney representing Sarah Taylor," the man replied smoothly, stepping slightly forward into the threshold despite Mark's imposing posture. "Mrs. Taylor has retained my services regarding emergency guardianship petitions for the minor child, Chloe Taylor, as well as immediate asset freezing injunctions for this property."

Emily gasped audibly from the hallway, her legs buckling slightly as she grabbed the wooden banister for support. "She's... she's trying to take my baby?" she cried out, the horror of the situation dawning on her with crushing clarity.

Mark’s blood ran cold, instantly replaced by an incandescent rage that burned hotter than anything he had ever experienced. This wasn't just a bitter family dispute anymore; Sarah had launched a full-scale legal and psychological assault designed to strip them of everything they loved.

"Get off my porch," Mark growled, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped directly into the lawyer's personal space.

Arthur Vance didn't flinch, merely raising an eyebrow as he calmly slid a set of legal documents onto the small entry table. "You'll be served formally in the morning, Mr. Taylor. Given the allegations of domestic instability and psychological distress documented by your mother within the household, CPS has already been notified. I advise you to cooperate."

With that chilling warning, the lawyer turned on his heel and walked down the steps toward a sleek black sedan idling at the curb, its taillights glowing like dying embers in the dark.

Mark slammed the door shut with a force that rattled the glass panes, locking the deadbolt with a sharp, echoing click. He turned to face Emily, whose face was completely drained of color. The trap had sprung, and Sarah was tightening the noose.
