Chapter 6 - Dawn of the InquisitionThe morning sun cast harsh, unsparing light across the living room as a knock rattled the front door just after eight o'clock. Mark and Emily had barely slept a wink, spending the dark hours reviewing their meager savings, comforting a fussy baby, and preparing for a battle they never asked to fight.

When Mark opened the door, he was greeted not by lawyers, but by two stern-looking caseworkers from Child Protective Services, accompanied by a local police officer.
"Mr. Taylor? We received an anonymous call—substantiated by formal affidavit—regarding an unsafe environment and physical altercations involving a minor in this home," the lead caseworker, a sharp-eyed woman named Agent Miller, stated professionally as she flashed her badge. "We need to conduct an immediate welfare check and interview both parents."
Emily stepped forward from the kitchen, her voice trembling but surprisingly resolute. "Please, come in. My baby is safe, and I can explain everything that happened yesterday."
For the next hour, the agents inspected every corner of the nursery, reviewed documentation, and questioned Mark and Emily separately. Mark made sure to detail his mother’s unprovoked assault on Emily, pointing out the security camera footage he had quietly downloaded from the hallway nanny cam before confronting Sarah the day before.
Agent Miller watched the grainy video on Mark’s laptop—the footage showing Sarah lunging at Emily while little Chloe cried helplessly in the crib. The caseworker’s expression shifted from professional detachment to unmistakable disgust.
"This footage changes the context of the initial report significantly," Agent Miller noted, taking detailed notes on her tablet. "It appears the primary aggressor was not the mother or the father, but an outside party granted temporary residence. Where is Mrs. Sarah Taylor right now?"
"She left last night after I threw her out," Mark answered firmly. "She's using a high-priced lawyer to file fraudulent guardianship claims because of a personal grudge from thirty years ago."

Agent Miller closed her folder and looked up with a sympathetic yet cautious nod. "Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, we cannot close the case immediately due to the mandatory protocols surrounding emergency filings. However, this video will be submitted as primary evidence that Emily is the victim, not the perpetrator. I strongly suggest you secure a family defense attorney immediately."
As the caseworkers and officer departed, Mark felt a tiny glimmer of hope pierce through the gloom, but he knew Sarah’s next move would be even more ruthless.
