Chapter 10 - DANIEL'S ACCOUNTABILITY

Daniel entered therapy.
Not to save the marriage.
Claire had already filed for separation.
He wanted to understand the structure of his lies.
He called it:
compartmentalization.
Claire disliked how clinical that sounded.
The therapist translated:
“You made each person responsible for only the information that kept your life easiest.”
That was better.
Megan knew Claire existed.
Claire did not know Ryan existed.
Ryan knew Claire existed but believed she knew about him.
Daniel’s mother knew.
His brother knew later.
Everyone possessed a different slice.
Daniel was the only person with the whole picture.
That gave him control.
Then Claire asked:
“Did you like that?”
Daniel looked sick.
“At first, no.”
“And later?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
Because control meant no one could confront him with all consequences at once.
Until the brick.
The brick collapsed every compartment in three seconds.
Then Daniel addressed the slap he gave Ryan.
He apologized to the boy.
Not for stopping him.
For hitting him.
“You hurt Lily. I was terrified and angry. I still should not have hit you.”
Ryan asked:
“Are you mad at me?”
“Yes.”
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
“Are you still my dad?”
“Yes.”
Then Ryan asked:
“Do I get to live with you?”
Daniel finally said the sentence he should have said months earlier.
“I don’t know yet.”
Ryan exploded.
“You promised!”
“I know.”
“You lied!”
“Yes.”
That honesty hurt Ryan more in the moment.
But it was the first stable ground.
Then Ryan screamed:
“Lily gets everything!”
Daniel answered:
“This is not Lily’s fault.”
May you like
Ryan cried.
For the first time, he did not argue.
