Chapter 9 - MEGAN'S TRUTH
Megan’s letters changed Claire’s view of her.
At first Claire imagined the other woman as a willing partner in deception.
Reality was mixed.
Megan agreed to secrecy initially.
She feared Daniel’s marriage would collapse and Ryan would be blamed.
She told herself:
Ryan has stability.
Claire has her marriage.
Daniel can support quietly.
That arrangement became harder to justify as Ryan aged.
When Ryan asked why Dad did not come to school events openly, Megan said:
“Complicated.”
She hated herself for it.
Then she wrote:
I kept thinking secrecy was protecting Ryan from rejection. I did not notice secrecy was teaching him to expect rejection.
That line hurt Claire.
Megan eventually pushed Daniel to disclose.
He delayed.
When she became ill, she stopped accepting excuses.
Then a voice message surfaced.
Megan:
“You cannot move him into Claire’s house like a package.”
Daniel:
“He’s my son.”
Megan:
“And Claire is your wife. Lily is your child. Everybody in that house is a person.”
Daniel:
“I know.”
Megan:
“No, you know facts. I’m talking about consent.”
Silence.
Megan continued:
“If I die before you fix this, Ryan will think Claire took something from him.”
Daniel whispered:
“I’ll fix it.”
He did not.
Then Claire heard a later voice note.
Megan, weaker:
“Promise me you won’t make Ryan hate that little girl.”
Daniel:
“I would never.”
Megan:
“You don’t have to say hate. You only have to make him feel second.”
Claire stopped the recording.
Daniel had not intentionally taught jealousy.
But intention did not erase outcome.
Then Claire asked herself something she hated.
Would she have stayed with Daniel if he told her eight years ago?
Maybe.
Would she have accepted Ryan?
Maybe.
Would she have needed time?
