Chapter 19- THE BROTHER WHO KNEW
Daniel wanted to explode.
Claire refused to let him.
“You confront Michael now, he knows we’re checking him.”
“He’s manipulating my children.”
“Yes.”
“My children.”
Claire held his gaze.
“Then behave like their father, not like an angry brother.”
That silenced him.
Years earlier, Daniel might have stormed into Michael’s house.
Now he called his therapist first.
Then his attorney.
Claire noticed the difference.
Growth did not erase what Daniel had done.
But it existed anyway.
Their attorney advised them not to reveal the handwriting result yet.
Michael had made his first mistake.
They needed to understand why.
The obvious answer was the house.
Eight hundred and sixty thousand dollars.
But something bothered Claire.
If Michael simply wanted the property, why provoke Ryan and Lily?
Why create evidence that could damage him?
Unless the conflict between the children served another purpose.
Jenna found the next piece.
Evelyn’s old monthly statements showed something strange.
For years, property taxes had been paid directly from Evelyn’s checking account.
Then, fourteen months before her death, that stopped.
Michael began paying them.
At least on paper.
But Evelyn’s account was also making monthly transfers.
Exactly $2,400.
To an LLC.
Daniel recognized the company name.
“M.B. Property Solutions.”
Claire looked at Michael’s full name on the legal filing.
Michael Bennett.
Daniel whispered:
“That’s his company.”
The transfers totaled more than thirty thousand dollars.
Michael had presented himself in court as the son financially supporting his mother.
But Evelyn had been sending money to him.
More money than he spent on her.
They requested deeper records.
Michael’s lawyers resisted.
They argued the transactions involved private business matters unrelated to probate.
That resistance made Claire more interested.
Ryan, meanwhile, was struggling.
Not violently.
Not like before.
He had learned other ways to be angry.
He became quiet.
Stopped responding to Daniel.
Stopped texting Lily.
Then one afternoon Lily came home furious.
“He quit the soccer team.”
Claire looked up.
“How do you know?”
“He told Dad.”
“Why does that make you angry?”
“Because he likes soccer.”
Children sometimes reached the center faster than adults.
That evening Lily sent Ryan one message:
You’re being stupid.
Ryan replied:
Thanks.
Then:
Michael says this whole thing ends if I give up my half.
Lily stared at the screen.
What half?
Ryan sent a photograph.
A legal document.
It proposed that Ryan voluntarily disclaim any interest in Evelyn’s estate.
In exchange, Michael would withdraw his challenge against the first will.
The result?
Lily would receive the house alone.
Michael had told Ryan that sacrificing his inheritance was the only way to protect his little sister from another family war.
