Chapter 6 - WHO BELONGS HERE

Ryan’s attack on Lily remained serious.
A ten-year-old had struck a five-year-old with a brick.
Child services, pediatric specialists, and juvenile authorities became involved.
But nobody treated Ryan as an adult villain.
He was evaluated.
His story came out in pieces.
Daniel had told him:
“You’ll have a room.”
“You’ll be with me.”
“You won’t have to move again.”
“This is your home too.”
All understandable promises from a father.
Then Ryan added another.
“Lily already has everything.”
The evaluator asked:
“What does that mean?”
Ryan answered:
“She has Dad every day.”
That was true.
Then:
“She has my room.”
What room?
Daniel had once shown Ryan photographs of the Bennett house.
He pointed to the guest room.
Said:
“That could be yours.”
Months later Claire converted part of that room into a craft/play room for Lily.
Daniel sent Ryan a newer photo accidentally.
Ryan saw Lily’s toys.
He believed Claire had taken his promised room and given it to Lily.
Daniel never corrected the misunderstanding clearly.
Instead:
“We’ll work it out.”
Then another message from Daniel to Ryan:
Don’t worry. You’re my first son. Nobody can change that.
Ryan interpreted:
first means greater.
Daniel said he meant chronology.
A ten-year-old heard hierarchy.
Then Ryan’s therapist asked:
“Did your dad ever say Lily did not belong?”
“No.”
“Did he say you belonged more?”
Ryan thought.
“No.”
“Then where did that come from?”
Ryan began crying.
“Because I was there first.”
Biology became arithmetic.
Older.
First.
More entitled.
No adult explicitly taught him that.
But secrecy created scarcity.
Ryan thought fatherhood was a limited resource Claire and Lily had taken.
Then Claire learned the brick had been brought inside by Ryan from the garden earlier that morning.
He had been collecting rocks for a school project.
No preplanned weapon.
He grabbed the heaviest object nearby during an emotional explosion.
Still dangerous.
Still accountability.
But not a plotted attack.
Then Lily asked Claire:
May you like
“Does Ryan hate me?”
Claire did not know how to answer.
