Chapter 21 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE
The power of attorney became the center of the case.
Hospital records confirmed Evelyn had been admitted on the date of execution.
Michael responded quickly.
Too quickly.
His attorney produced an affidavit saying the date was a clerical error and that Evelyn had actually signed three days earlier.
There were security-camera problems.
Missing office footage.
A former receptionist who suddenly could not remember the meeting.
Michael had an answer for everything.
That made him dangerous.
Not because every answer was convincing.
Because every answer created enough uncertainty to delay.
Delay was his strategy.
The longer probate continued, the greater the legal costs.
The more frightened Ryan and Lily became.
The more likely everyone would accept a settlement.
Michael offered one.
He would relinquish his claim to the house if the estate paid him $310,000 for “documented caregiving expenses and debts owed by Evelyn.”
Daniel almost accepted.
Claire stared at him.
“You can’t be serious.”
“If this drags on for two years—”
“So you pay him because he made the truth expensive?”
“I’m trying to protect the kids.”
Claire’s voice hardened.
“You said that exact sentence about hiding Ryan.”
Daniel stopped.
No one spoke.
“You don’t get to call avoidance protection anymore.”
Daniel looked away.
Then back.
“You’re right.”
It was not dramatic.
No defense.
No excuse.
Just:
“You’re right.”
Ryan heard about the settlement and became furious.
“Give him the money.”
Jenna said no.
“I don’t care about Grandma’s house.”
Lily, sitting across the room, suddenly snapped:
“Well, I do.”
Everyone turned.
Lily’s eyes filled.
“Grandma wanted us to have something together.”
Ryan stared at her.
Lily continued.
“Not because we’re best friends. We’re not. But she wrote our names together.”
That reached him.
Ryan sat down.
Then Claire understood what Evelyn had done.
The house was not merely money.
Evelyn had deliberately left one thing requiring Lily and Ryan to exist on the same line without ranking.
Equal.
Michael understood that too.
Which was why he attacked the relationship first.
A week later, Jenna found an old voice recorder while cleaning a box of Megan’s possessions.
Most files were years old.
Medical appointments.
Grocery reminders.
Ryan as a child.
Then one file contained Evelyn’s voice.
Claire listened.
Evelyn was speaking to Megan.
They had known each other better than anyone realized.
Megan said:
“If anything happens to me, Jenna gets Ryan until Daniel gets his life straight.”
Evelyn answered:
“I agree.”
Then Megan asked:
“And Michael?”
A long silence.
Evelyn finally said:
“I don’t want Michael anywhere near Ryan’s money.”
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the device.
“Why would my mother say that years ago?”
