Chapter 2 - THE FRIEND'S SON
Daniel had introduced Ryan as the son of an old college friend.
His explanation:
Ryan’s mother had died six weeks earlier.
The boy’s temporary guardian needed emergency surgery.
Ryan needed somewhere safe for a few days.
Claire agreed.
Of course she did.
She bought extra cereal.
Made up the guest room.
Asked Lily to share toys.
Ryan arrived carrying one backpack and a black duffel bag.
He barely spoke to Claire.
But around Daniel, something was different.
Claire noticed it.
She simply misread it.
Ryan watched Daniel constantly.
When Daniel entered a room, Ryan sat straighter.
When Daniel laughed, Ryan looked relieved.
When Daniel left for work, Ryan became restless.
Claire assumed grief.
Now she asked:
“How long have you known him?”
Daniel sat in the hospital family room.
“Ten years.”
Claire laughed once.
A broken sound.
“How?”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Then:
“His mother was Megan Cole.”
Claire knew the name.
Barely.
Daniel once said Megan was a former coworker who moved to Ohio.
That was all.
Daniel continued:
“We dated before I met you.”
Claire’s face went cold.
“How long before?”
“About a year.”
“And Ryan?”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“He’s my son.”
Claire stared at him.
Not accusation.
Not yet.
Shock.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“For ten years?”
“No.”
“How long?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Eight.”
That was worse.
Claire had been married to Daniel for nine years.
He learned Ryan existed one year into their marriage.
And told her nothing.
Then Claire asked:
“Did you ever see him?”
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.”
“How many times?”
“I don’t know.”
“How many?”
“Claire…”
“How many?”
“Maybe forty.”
Her hands went numb.
Forty secret meetings.
Birthdays.
School events.
Lunches.
Parks.
Hotel lobbies during business trips.
Daniel had built a second fatherhood in the margins of their marriage.
Then the investigator returned carrying Ryan’s backpack.
Inside was an emergency contact form from his school.
