Chapter 4 - THE FORTY VISITS

Daniel’s travel calendar changed shape.
Chicago conference.
Columbus client visit.
Cleveland vendor meeting.
Some were real.
Some included Ryan.
Claire and Grace separated them carefully.
They did not assume every trip was a lie.
Twenty-six documented meetings with Ryan over eight years.
Another fourteen likely.
Forty was roughly accurate.
Daniel attended:
two birthdays,
one school play,
three soccer games,
a science fair,
one emergency-room visit for an asthma episode,
and Megan’s funeral.
Claire knew about none of them.
Then a photograph surfaced.
Ryan at nine.
Daniel beside him.
Birthday cake.
Daniel’s arm around Ryan’s shoulders.
On the back, Megan had written:
FIRST BIRTHDAY HE GOT TO CALL YOU DAD OUT LOUD.
Claire stared at the date.
That day, Daniel told Claire he was helping his mother move furniture.
Claire asked:
“Did your mother know?”
Daniel’s silence answered.
His mother, Evelyn Bennett, knew.
Not from the beginning.
For four years.
Claire felt another floor disappear.
“Who else?”
Daniel’s brother Michael knew for eighteen months.
His oldest friend knew.
A family attorney knew.
Claire laughed bitterly.
“So I was the only one married to you who didn’t.”
Then Daniel said:
“I was trying to figure out how to tell you.”
“For eight years?”
“No.”
He admitted the truth.
At first he intended to tell her.
Then Claire became pregnant with Lily.
He panicked.
He feared Claire would interpret Ryan as evidence of an affair.
There had been no affair.
Ryan was conceived before Claire and Daniel met.
But Daniel had lied so long that the innocent timeline no longer protected him.
Then Lily was born.
Daniel told himself:
Not during postpartum.
Then Claire’s father died.
Not now.
Then work crisis.
Not now.
Then Megan became ill.
Not now.
Every delay created the next excuse.
Then Claire asked:
“When did you promise Ryan he could live with us?”
Daniel stared at her.

That secret was newer.
And more dangerous.
