Chapter 5 - THE PROMISE

Megan was diagnosed with aggressive ovarian cancer eleven months earlier.

Treatment began.

Ryan was nine.

Daniel increased contact.

Claire thought Daniel was working late.

Some nights he sat beside Megan in treatment.

Other nights he took Ryan to dinner.

Megan asked:

“If I die, what happens to him?”

Daniel said:

“He comes to me.”

He made that promise without speaking to Claire.

Why?

Because he was Ryan’s father.

Because it felt morally obvious.

Because admitting he needed Claire’s agreement would require revealing everything.

So he made the promise first.

Planned the truth later.

Then Megan asked:

“Does Claire know?”

Daniel lied.

“Yes.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The lie was not only about her.

He lied to a dying woman too.

Megan died seven weeks before the brick incident.

Her will named her sister Jenna as temporary guardian pending resolution of Ryan’s long-term care.

Why not Daniel directly?

Because Daniel had never publicly established a household relationship with Ryan.

Megan worried a sudden move would traumatize him.

She asked adults to transition him carefully.

The will included a letter.

To Claire.

Claire froze.

“There was a letter for me?”

Daniel nodded.

“Where is it?”

He had it.

Unopened.

For seven weeks.

Why?

“I was scared.”

Claire laughed.

Again.

Fear.

Always Daniel’s fear.

Never anyone else’s right to know.

Grace obtained the letter.

Claire opened it alone.

Megan wrote:

Claire, I am sorry you are learning about Ryan later than you should have. Daniel told me you knew. I recently realized that may not be true.

Claire stopped.

Megan had become suspicious.

Why?

Ryan once asked:

“When Claire says yes, can I move in?”

Megan asked why Ryan thought Claire still needed to say yes if she already knew.

Ryan answered:

“Dad says she needs time.”

Megan realized Daniel’s stories did not align.

Then the final paragraph:

Please do not punish Ryan for what adults hid. He thinks your home has been promised to him. That promise did not come from me.

Claire began crying.

Not for Daniel.

May you like

For Ryan.

He had been living inside a future nobody else agreed to.
