Chapter 14 - THE FIRST MEETING

Nine months after the attack, Lily and Ryan had their first supervised therapeutic meeting.
Both had done individual work.
Lily was six.
Ryan eleven.
Claire almost canceled.
Lily said:
“I want to see if he’s still scary.”
The therapist gently reframed.
“We’re not testing him. We’re meeting for ten minutes.”
Ryan entered first.
No gifts.
No big apology speech.
Lily sat beside Claire.
Daniel was not in the room.
That was intentional.
The meeting was about the children, not his redemption.
Ryan said:
“Hi.”
Lily said nothing.
Then:
“Hi.”
Ryan looked at the floor.
“I’m sorry I hit you.”
Lily asked:
“Why did you?”
Ryan swallowed.
“I thought Dad was supposed to be mine.”
Lily frowned.
“People aren’t toys.”
Claire almost laughed.
The therapist smiled.
Ryan nodded.
“I know.”
Then Lily asked:
“Do you still think I don’t belong?”
“No.”
“Do you think you belong more?”
Ryan hesitated.
Then:
“No.”
Lily looked at Claire.
Then back.
“Okay.”
Not forgiveness.
Information.
The session ended after eight minutes.
Lily chose to leave.
Ryan looked sad.
But did not protest.
That mattered.
Then outside, Daniel asked Claire:
“How was it?”
She answered:
“Not yours.”
He looked confused.
“Their meeting. Not yours to measure.”
He nodded.
Another boundary.
Then Daniel told Claire something new.
Ryan had stopped calling the Bennett house:
my house.
He called it:
Claire and Lily’s house.
May you like
Claire did not celebrate.
But she noticed.
