Chapter 10 - Stalked in the Dark

The revelation felt like a bucket of ice water poured over my head.

"She was tracking me?" I asked, my voice barely a squeak.

Detective Morris opened a folder and handed us a stack of documents. They were surveillance reports, complete with photographs.

There were pictures of me walking into my obstetrician's office. Pictures of me having lunch with my mother. Pictures of me pumping gas, buying groceries, and walking our dog. Margaret had spent over eighteen thousand dollars having a private investigator follow my every move for eight months.

"Why?" Daniel demanded, his body shaking with rage. "What was she looking for?!"

"Pierce gave a full statement to our investigators an hour ago," Morris explained. "He said Margaret was convinced that Emily was planning to leave you after the baby was born. She wanted him to find dirt—financial instability, past relationships, anything—that could be used in court to strip Emily of parental rights so you and Margaret could raise the baby together."

"That's insane!" I cried out, hot tears spilling down my face. "I love my husband! I never wanted to leave him!"

"We know," Morris said gently. "Pierce realized Margaret was completely delusional. But three weeks ago, Pierce terminated his contract with her."

"Why did he quit?" Daniel asked.

Detective Morris hesitated, looking deeply uncomfortable. "Because Margaret asked him a question that crossed the line into criminal intent."

"What question?" I pressed.

Morris took a breath. "Pierce claims Margaret asked him if he knew of any ways a pregnant woman could be frightened severely enough to cause a miscarriage without leaving physical marks."

I choked on my breath, clutching my hands over my mouth.

Margaret hadn't just lost her temper in a sudden moment of rage. She had been fantasizing about destroying my pregnancy for months. She wanted my baby gone, or she wanted me gone. And when her private investigator refused to help her, she took matters into her own hands at the dinner table.

"She's a monster," Daniel whispered, covering his face as he broke down weeping. "My mother is a monster."
