Chapter 8 - The Crack in the Shield

|
Around 10:00 AM, a soft knock came at the door.
Robert Whitmore stepped into the room holding a brown paper bag. He looked like he had aged twenty years overnight. His eyes were sunken, his hands trembling, and his back hunched over as if carrying an unbearable weight.
"Emily..." he whispered, stopping near the doorway. "I brought Daniel a change of clothes... I didn't know if you'd want me here."
Part of me wanted to scream at him to leave. For years, Robert had watched Margaret belittle me. He had watched her manipulate Daniel. He had laughed nervously whenever she insulted people because standing up to her was too inconvenient. Cowardice, when sustained long enough, becomes complicity.
"Come in, Robert," I said, my voice hollow.
He walked to the foot of the bed and dropped his gaze to the floor. "I am so sorry, Emily. I should have stopped her years ago."
"Yes," I replied coldly, not offering him an ounce of comfort. "You should have."
Robert flinched, nodding slowly. "I know. I am a coward."
Daniel stepped away from the window, looking at his father with cold detachment. "Why now, Dad? Why did you finally speak up last night?"
Robert swallowed hard, looking toward the hallway before stepping further into the room and closing the door behind him.
"Because this wasn't the first time," Robert whispered, tears filling his aged eyes. "This wasn't the first time your mother hurt someone."
Daniel’s brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"When you were nine years old," Robert began, his voice trembling, "your mother’s younger sister, Laura, lived with us for six months. Do you remember Aunt Laura?"
"Barely," Daniel said. "She moved away suddenly. You guys said she didn't want contact with the family."
"That was a lie," Robert said, shaking his head. "Laura was pregnant at the time. One afternoon, she and Margaret got into a furious argument in the hallway. Your mother... she pushed Laura down the basement stairs."
My skin prickled with instant dread. Daniel backed away from his father, his eyes wide with horror. "No..."
"She fell all the way to the bottom," Robert continued, weeping quietly. "Laura survived, and the baby survived, but Margaret convinced everyone that Laura had tripped because she was clumsy. I saw your mother push her, Daniel. I saw it, and I said nothing."
"You lied for her?!" Daniel screamed, his voice echoing down the hospital hall. "For thirty years, you let me believe my mother was a good person?!"
"I convinced myself it was an accident!" Robert cried out defensively. "I convinced myself she had changed! I was afraid of her, Daniel!"

"And you let me bring my pregnant wife into her house?!" Daniel raged, grabbing his father by the collar. "You knew what she was capable of, and you let us go there?!"
Robert didn't fight back. He just stood there, sobbing silently, broken by the truth he had kept buried for three decades.
