Chapter 17 - Flight to Denver

The room exploded into absolute chaos.
"What do you mean he's been dead?!" Detective Morris demanded, turning to Laura’s video feed.
"My husband Thomas disappeared in 1997!" Laura wept hysterically. "They found his truck abandoned by the river! His wallet was on the dashboard! They declared him dead!"
"Was a body ever found?!" Morris pressed aggressively.
"They found partial skeletal remains in the woods six months later," Robert stammered, his face ghostly pale. "The police couldn't get DNA back then... so they used dental records to identify him!"
Detective Morris’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. "And who provided the dentist records to the coroner back in 1997, Robert?"
Robert swallowed hard, tears pouring down his face. "Margaret... Margaret knew his dentist."
"My God," I gasped, the horror settling into my bones. "Margaret didn't just help him disappear... she faked his death!"
"Thomas didn't die," Daniel realized, staring at the airport photo of the silver-haired man. "He ran away with Margaret's help, or he was hiding from her... and now, his daughter found him."
Detective Morris immediately picked up her desk phone. "Get me the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We have an international flight tracking emergency. Suspects Claire Brennan—alias Carolyn Hayes—and Thomas Brennan are currently in transit."
"Where were they flying?" Daniel asked frantically.
"Their flight was bound for Denver, Colorado," Morris revealed, reading the flight manifest. "They landed two hours ago. But when local federal agents swept the Denver airport, both of them had already ghosted through the terminal and disappeared into a waiting rental car."

They were gone.
Carolyn—or Claire—had successfully retrieved her biological father, stolen the ledger containing forty years of Margaret’s dark secrets, and vanished into thin air, leaving behind a trail of absolute destruction.
