Chapter 13 - Secrets Written in Blood

|

We took Laura’s letter directly to Detective Morris. The investigation, which had started as a fatal assault on me, was quickly spiraling into a decades-old web of kidnapping and conspiracy.

Armed with a new search warrant targeting Margaret’s personal study, police searched every inch of the Whitmore estate.

In the back of a hidden wall safe behind a oil painting, detectives found a thick lockbox. Inside were old bank statements showing massive cash withdrawals from 1993, legal documents... and a sealed envelope marked in Margaret's sharp handwriting:

FOR DANIEL — ONLY IF NECESSARY.

Detective Morris opened the envelope in front of Daniel, Robert, and me at the police station.

Inside was an original birth certificate from 1988—Daniel’s birth certificate.

Daniel reached out with trembling fingers and picked up the paper. But as his eyes scanned down the page to the section labeled Father's Name, his entire body went rigid.

It didn't say Robert Whitmore.

It read: Thomas Brennan.

Daniel stared at the name, utterly bewildered. "Who... who is Thomas Brennan?"

Beside us, Robert let out a sickening groan, burying his face in his hands.

On the conference room table, a tablet was connected via video call to Laura Brennan in Oregon. Hearing the name, Laura’s breath hitched loudly over the speaker.

"Thomas... Thomas Brennan was my husband," Laura whispered, her voice trembling with shock.

The room went dead silent.

Daniel looked from the paper to his father, his eyes filled with terrifying realization. "My mother... had a baby with her sister's husband?"

Robert nodded slowly, tears streaming down his wrinkled cheeks. "Years before you were born... Margaret had an affair with Thomas. When she got pregnant with you, I agreed to put my name on the birth certificate later and raise you as my own because I loved her, and we wanted to protect Laura from finding out."

"You lied to me my whole life!" Daniel screamed at Robert.

"It gets darker, Daniel," Laura’s voice came through the speaker, cold and shivering. "If Thomas was your father... then my daughter Claire wasn't just your cousin. She was your biological half-sister. Margaret didn't just hate me... she was obsessed with my husband. And when I had Claire, Margaret couldn't stand that Thomas had a child with me."
