Chapter 14 - Following the Paper Trail

|

The dark puzzle of the Whitmore family was finally coming together, revealing a portrait of a woman driven by unhinged jealousy and control.

Detective Morris spent the next forty-eight hours analyzing the contents of Margaret’s hidden lockbox. Among the cash receipts from thirty years ago was a handwritten contract signed by a woman named Evelyn Carter, located in a small town outside Minneapolis, Minnesota.

"We sent local authorities to the address in Minnesota yesterday," Detective Morris informed us during an emergency meeting. "Evelyn Carter passed away seven years ago. But her daughter, Sarah, still lives in the home."

"Did Sarah know anything about the baby?" Daniel asked frantically.

Morris pulled out a folder. "Sarah was showed an infant photograph of Claire Brennan. She immediately broke down in tears and confessed everything."

"Confessed what?" I asked.

"In 1993, Margaret Whitmore paid Evelyn Carter fifty thousand dollars in cash to take baby Claire and raise her under a completely new identity," Morris revealed. "There was no legal adoption. No state oversight. Margaret literally bought a child off the grid to destroy her sister and hide her past."

"Where is she now?" Daniel demanded, leaning over the desk. "Where is my sister?!"

Detective Morris looked directly into Daniel’s eyes, her expression deeply shaken.

"Sarah told us that the girl grew up in Minnesota, but when she turned twenty-one, she moved to this city," Morris said slowly. "In fact... she has been working right next to your family for the last five years."

"What?" Daniel blinked, completely lost. "Who is she?"

"Her legal name is Carolyn Hayes," Morris answered.

I gasped, gripping Daniel’s arm so hard my knuckles turned white.

Carolyn Hayes.

She wasn't a stranger. She was Margaret’s quiet, incredibly efficient personal assistant—the woman who scheduled Margaret's life, picked up her dry cleaning, arranged family dinners, and had stood silently in the background of our lives for half a decade.

Margaret’s dedicated assistant was the stolen baby girl.
