Chapter 2 - The Strike

|

Margaret stood up so fast her dining chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor.

"Don’t you dare lecture me in my own house, girl!" she snarled, her face flushing a deep, mottled red.

Daniel stood up right beside her, stepping into her path. "Mom, sit down. Right now."

But calm words had never stopped Margaret. They only acted like gasoline on a fire. She shoved past Daniel, her eyes fixed on me with a raw, unhinged fury.

At first, I thought she just wanted to intimidate me, to loom over me until I backed down. I pushed my chair back and tried to stand, steadying my heavy body on the edge of the mahogany table. But before I could fully rise, Margaret stepped in close and drove a hard, vicious kick directly into my side, just beneath my belly.

The impact was brutal. Pain exploded through my midsection, sharp and blinding.

"Ah!" I gasped, folding forward as the chair behind me toppled over.

"Emily!" Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with absolute horror.

I dropped straight to my knees, collapsing onto the cold dining room tile. I couldn’t draw breath. The room spun wildly above me as a deep, sickening pressure twisted in my abdomen. And then, I felt a terrible, hot warmth spreading quickly between my legs.

I looked down through blurred vision.

Dark, heavy blood was soaking straight through my light blue dress, pooling onto the floor beneath me.

"Oh God... oh God, no!" I sobbed, clutching my stomach.

Margaret stepped back, her face suddenly losing all its color, but even faced with the horror on the floor, her immediate reaction wasn’t concern. It was defense.

"She... she made me do it!" Margaret stuttered, backing toward the counter. "She pushed me to the edge!"

Daniel looked at his mother, then down at me, and then at the growing crimson stain on the tile. Something inside him—thirty-six years of obedience and fear—shattered completely.

He pulled out his phone, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped it.

"No more lies," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with a rage I had never heard before. "I’m calling the police."
