Chapter 7 - A Badge at the Bedside

|
By sunrise, the frantic medical staff had cleared out, leaving behind a heavy, somber silence.
At 7:00 AM, a tall woman in a sharp dark suit walked into the room. Her expression was solemn as she showed us a gold shield.
"Mr. and Mrs. Whitmore? I'm Detective Lena Morris with the Special Victims Unit," she said softly. "I am so deeply sorry for your devastating loss."
The word loss felt ridiculously small. You lose a pair of keys. You don't "lose" a unborn child because his grandmother kicked him to death.
"I need to ask a few questions when you feel up to it, Emily," Detective Morris said, pulling up a chair.
Daniel stood up from the bed, wiping his tired face. "I already gave my statement to the officers at the house. My father gave one too."
"I have those statements," Morris replied. "And they are crucial. But your mother is currently down at the precinct, claiming that Emily lunged at her, and that she merely raised her foot in self-defense."
I let out a bitter, lifeless laugh. "I was thirty-two weeks pregnant. I could barely stand up from the table. She walked across the room and attacked me."
"We know," Morris said gently. "And thankfully, we may have more than just your word against hers."
Daniel frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Your father told the responding officers that there might be security footage of the incident," the detective revealed.
Daniel looked confused. "Security footage? My dad installed cameras outside the house for package thefts, but there aren't any inside."
"According to your father, your mother insisted on installing a hidden camera inside the kitchen pantry two years ago because she suspected a housekeeper was stealing," Morris explained. "It points directly at the dining area. We have a warrant currently being executed to seize the recording server."
Before Daniel could process the news, his phone vibrated sharply on the bedside table. He picked it up and froze.
"What is it?" I asked.
Without a word, Daniel turned the screen toward me. It was a text message from Margaret.
Daniel, think very carefully before you destroy this family over a tragic accident. Your father is confused and emotional. I can forgive what you said last night, but only if you fix this before it becomes permanent.
A second text popped up right beneath it.
Emily has always wanted to separate you from us. Don't let her win.

Daniel stared at the words, his face hardening into absolute ice. He walked over to Detective Morris and handed her the phone.
"Take screenshots," Daniel said coldly. "And use them against her."
