Chapter 9 - Caught on Tape

|

That afternoon, Detective Morris returned to my hospital room. The look on her face was grave.

"We retrieved the footage from the pantry camera," she announced, closing the door behind her. "I have reviewed it with the District Attorney."

Daniel sat up straight in his chair. "Does it show what she did?"

"It caught everything," Morris confirmed softly. "In crystal-clear high definition. And the audio is pristine."

She pulled out a tablet and placed it on the bedside table. On the screen was a high-angle shot of the Whitmore dining room.

We watched in agonized silence as the footage played out. We saw Margaret standing up, her face twisted in rage. We saw Daniel stepping in front of her. We saw Margaret shoving past him, walking intentionally across the floor, and driving her foot straight into my stomach.

We heard the sickening impact. We heard my blood-curdling scream. We saw me collapse, bleeding onto the floor. And then, we heard Margaret’s loud, hysterical voice: She made me do it!

There was no self-defense. There was no accident. It was a cold, deliberate act of violence.

"This is enough to send her to prison for life," Daniel said, his fists clenched tight.

"It gets worse," Detective Morris warned. "The camera was set to continuous recording. We audited the footage from earlier that evening."

She skipped the video back twenty-three minutes before dinner.

On the screen, the dining room was empty, but Margaret walked into the frame, holding a cell phone to her ear. She was pacing near the kitchen counter while Daniel and I were out in the living room.

Her voice echoed clearly through the tablet’s speaker.

"He has to understand she cannot take him away from me," Margaret’s recorded voice hissed into the phone. "I don't care what happens to her marriage... Sometimes people need a shock before they remember where they belong."

The room fell dead silent.

"Who was she talking to?" I whispered, a chill running down my spine.

"We checked her cell phone records," Detective Morris revealed. "Over the last six months, your mother made over fifty calls to a single private investigator named Leonard Pierce."

Daniel stared at the detective in disbelief. "A private investigator? Why was my mother hiring a P.I.?"

"Because," Morris replied darkly, "Margaret was having your wife tracked."
