Chapter 12 - The Sisters Finally Say What They Mean

The confrontation happened through a structured mediation involving the trust dispute.

Catherine participated separately.

I attended only because Khloe wanted me there.

I did not sit beside her.

She chose Natalie.

Isabella entered looking immaculate.

No red dress.

No theatrical anger.

For twenty minutes attorneys discussed language.

Storage agreements.

Trust provisions.

Anthony’s letter.

Then Khloe interrupted.

“Why did you put your foot on me?”

Isabella’s attorney started to object to changing subjects.

Isabella answered anyway.

“Because you grabbed my purse.”

“You had the glass.”

“You were trying to take my property.”

“You were building a lie about me drinking.”

Isabella looked away.

Khloe continued.

“Was the money worth it?”

“It wasn't about money.”

“Then give up the claim.”

That stopped her.

Khloe had found the one question Isabella couldn’t answer.

Isabella’s face changed.

“You got him.”

“Dad?”

“You got the version of him I wanted.”

Khloe stared at her.

“I got a dying man.”

Anthony had developed cancer during Khloe’s twenties.

She handled appointments.

Medication.

Hospice.

Isabella visited, but less often.

She told herself Khloe had taken over.

Khloe saw it differently.

“You think those years were a prize?”

Isabella’s eyes filled.

“He called you when he was scared.”

“Because I answered.”

That hurt.

Isabella stood as if leaving.

Then sat again.

Finally she admitted the deepest truth.

If the trust ruled in her favor, she believed it would prove Anthony had intentionally preserved something for her alone.

Not Catherine.

Not Khloe.

Her.

Catherine spoke from across the table.

“He preserved those embryos because neither of us could let go.”

Isabella looked at her mother.

Catherine continued.

“That wasn't a gift to you. It was our unfinished grief.”

Isabella cried then.

Real tears.

They didn’t erase anything.

But they ended the lie about what she was protecting.
