Chapter 5 - Anthony's Letter
The letter was held with Anthony’s estate planning records.
Five pages.
Written nine months before he died.
Khloe read it beside me.
I watched her expression change three times.
Confusion.
Anger.
Then grief.
Anthony explained that the embryos had been created during a desperate period in his first marriage.
Isabella’s mother, Catherine, endured several unsuccessful transfers before Isabella was born.
The remaining embryos were preserved.
When Anthony and Catherine divorced, neither could agree about disposition.
Years passed.
Catherine wanted them destroyed.
Anthony couldn’t bring himself to authorize it.
Not because he intended to use them.
Because he associated them with the years they had fought to become parents.
Then Anthony admitted something Khloe had never known.
When he married Khloe’s mother, Elena, he considered ending storage.
He didn’t.
After Khloe was born, the embryos took on a different emotional meaning.
They became evidence of a life he once imagined and never lived.
He knew that was sentimental.
He knew it wasn’t legally sufficient.
He wrote:
I have delayed a decision because sometimes paying a bill is easier than admitting a chapter of your life is over.
Khloe cried at that.
Then she reached the paragraph about Isabella.
Anthony feared Isabella had spent her life interpreting his second marriage as replacement.
He had tried to reassure her.
Apparently he had failed.
He wanted both daughters notified because he didn’t want the embryos becoming another symbol of which daughter mattered more.
He explicitly wrote that neither daughter should treat them as an inheritance trophy.
Khloe lowered the pages.
“Isabella read this?”
Natalie nodded.
“She requested access to your father’s estate correspondence three months ago.”
Before the storage facility contacted Khloe.
Isabella had known the issue was coming.
She had time to prepare.
Khloe had not.
Then Natalie showed us an email.
Isabella had contacted the storage provider claiming Khloe supported transfer of decision-making authority to her.
Khloe had never agreed.
The hospital papers suddenly had a purpose.
Isabella needed Khloe’s signature to make an earlier representation look legitimate.
