Chapter 4 - The Secret Audio Recording Shocks The Cole Estate

Nathan turned his back on Victoria and walked over to the kitchen island where Grace’s torn maid uniform lay discarded.

Nestled inside the inner pocket was a small, inconspicuous micro-cassette recorder that Grace had carried for personal safety.

He picked it up with a steady hand, pressing the tiny silver playback button while staring directly into Victoria’s terrified eyes.

A burst of static hissed through the quiet room before a familiar, authoritative voice filled the high-ceilinged kitchen space.

It was Nathan’s late father, speaking from this exact study five years ago with chilling, remorseless cruelty toward a young Grace.

“Take the payoff check and get out of Chicago, girl, or I’ll make sure social services strips that child from your arms forever.”

Grace’s voice answered on the tape, trembling with heartbreaking agony as she begged for mercy against impossible odds.

“You can’t do this! Nathan has a right to know he’s going to be a father!” Grace’s recorded voice sobbed through the speaker.

“Nathan’s future is tied to the Kensington alliance, not a penniless maid,” his father’s voice replied with absolute disdain.

The audio tape clicked off automatically, leaving the kitchen wrapped in a suffocating, unbearable silence.

Victoria’s knees finally buckled, and she slid down the refrigerator door, burying her face in her manicured hands.

Nathan felt a tear slip down his cheek, not of sorrow, but of blinding fury directed at the ghost of the man who raised him.

He looked down at Grace, who was staring at him with cautious, exhausted eyes filled with years of unhealed trauma.
