Chapter 8 - Grace Shares The Terrifying Truth Of Five Years Ago

As the police officers retreated out the front doors, the heavy silence of the kitchen settled back over the broken room.

Nathan walked over slowly, kneeling down on the cold tile floor beside Grace and little Lily, who was still burying her face.

“I’m sorry,” Nathan whispered, his voice cracking with genuine remorse as he reached out a hesitant, trembling hand.

“I didn't know, Grace. I swear to God, I had no idea what my father and Victoria were doing behind my back.”

Grace raised her head, her dark eyes searching his face for any sign of deception before letting out a long, exhausted sigh.

“They threatened to throw me in a psychiatric ward and give Lily away to a corporate orphanage,” Grace whispered hoarsely.

“I had to change my name, dye my hair, and hide in a basement apartment three states away just to keep her safe.”

“And when you needed money for groceries, you took a job as a maid in the very house belonging to my family?” Nathan asked softly.

“I needed medical insurance for Lily’s recurring asthma treatments, and your agency was the only one that didn't run background checks.”

Nathan gently brushed a stray lock of hair away from Grace’s bruised forehead, his thumb lingering against her warm skin.

“You don't ever have to hide again,” Nathan promised, pulling them both into a protective, desperate embrace.
