Chapter 16 - The Lioness

The electronic keypad on the outside of the panic room sparked violently as the traitor aggressively short-circuited the main locking mechanism.
With a heavy, ominous groan, the massive steel door slowly slid open, revealing the dark, shadowed hallway of the basement.
A tall man wearing a maintenance uniform stepped quickly into the red light, holding a heavy, silenced pistol entirely focused on the cot.
Before he could even raise his weapon to aim at the sleeping children, Sofia stepped out from the shadows with absolute, lethal confidence.
She did not issue a warning, she did not hesitate, and she absolutely did not blink as she squeezed the heavy trigger twice.
The deafening gunshots echoed violently inside the confined space, the bright muzzle flashes briefly blinding everyone in the room.
The traitor violently staggered backward, clutching his chest as two hollow-point bullets struck him perfectly in the center of his mass.
He collapsed heavily onto the concrete floor, his weapon clattering uselessly away into the dark shadows of the corridor.
Leo woke up screaming in pure terror, the deafening noise completely shattering his peaceful, heavily protected sleep.
Sofia immediately dropped the weapon onto a nearby table, rushing to the cot to pull both Leo and Diego into a fiercely protective embrace.
"I have you, I have you, it is completely over," Sofia whispered rapidly, pressing their trembling faces tightly against her chest.
Mateo, the head of security, rushed down the stairs mere seconds later with a team of heavily armed guards, their flashlights cutting through the dark.
They saw the dead traitor bleeding on the floor and Sofia standing fiercely over her children like an enraged, beautiful lioness.

Mateo lowered his weapon respectfully, a profound, undeniable look of absolute awe and deep respect settling across his scarred face.
Dante’s queen did not need an army to protect her, because she was entirely capable of violently ending the monsters all on her own.
