Chapter 2 - THE NAME THAT SILENCED THE ROOM

“Tell me what happened to my mother.”
Lorenzo’s voice was quiet, but the question struck harder than a shout. Senator Whitmore’s wife suddenly looked very small beneath the chandelier.
“She bumped into me,” she stammered. “It was an accident.”
Lorenzo glanced at the shattered glass, then at his mother’s stained dress.
“And the waitress?”
“She interfered.”
His eyes shifted toward me.
“Did she?”
I hesitated. “Your mother was being humiliated. I only tried to stop it.”
Elena reached for my hand.
“And she did more than that,” she said softly. “She protected me.”
The senator’s wife’s face twisted with outrage. “You’re making this ridiculous!”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“No. You did.”
The room fell silent.
He turned toward his bodyguard. “Get my mother a coat.”
Then he looked at me again.
“What is your name?”
“Emma.”
“Emma what?”
“Carter.”
He repeated it quietly, as though memorizing it.
Then Elena smiled at me.
“Come home with us, Emma.”
I stared at her, stunned.
Before I could answer, Lorenzo said one final thing.
May you like
“You’re not finishing your shift tonight.”
And somehow, I knew my ordinary life had just ended.
