Chapter 44 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK

Mara opened her eyes nineteen days later.

The first face she saw was Noah's.

The second was Emma's.

The third was Lily's.

“Mama!”

Lily rushed to her bedside.

Mara burst into tears.

Emma stepped back.

She had seen reunions before.

But none ever felt ordinary.

Mara whispered, “Who are you?”

Emma smiled.

“My name is Emma.”

“Why are you here?”

“Because your daughter needed someone.”

Mara looked at Lily.

Then back at Emma.

“I have nothing.”

Emma shook her head.

“You have your daughter.”

Tears ran down Mara's cheeks.

“I can't repay you.”

“You don't have to.”

“Why?”

Emma glanced toward the hallway where Elena's portrait hung in a photograph inside the hospital's foundation wing.

“Someone once taught me that kindness isn't a debt.”

Mara looked at her.

“It just keeps moving.”

Emma nodded.

“Exactly.”

Mara eventually recovered enough to begin physical therapy.

The foundation helped her find housing and a part-time position when she was ready.

Lily returned to school.
